What is the difference between a speech delay and a language delay? Speech (articulation) is the way we are able to create sounds for communication purposes. It's the combination of speech sounds that creates words and gets our message to others. Speech Delays mean that someone is not able to produce all the sounds generally mastered by a certain age. The most difficult sounds to master in English are /r/ and /s/.

Language delay is NOT THE SAME. It means that your ability to manipulate words and combine them in different ways to communicate effectively is affected. Perhaps your child struggles with using him/her/she/he correctly in sentences. This is a language hurdle. They can say the words without difficulty, but the way they use them is not mastered at the same time as most of their peers. Speech and language delays can exist TOGETHER, or SEPARATELY.

WHAT IS SUMMER SLIDE?
“Summer slide” is a term used to describe the loss of academic and communication skills that can happen when children are out of school for the summer. Just like muscles can weaken without regular exercise, speech, language, reading, and learning skills can become harder when children go several months without consistent practice.

For children with speech or language delays, the effects of summer slide can be even more noticeable. Skills that took months to build during the school year—such as pronouncing sounds clearly, following directions, answering questions, using longer sentences, or social communication—may slow down or regress without continued support.

Speech therapy during the summer helps children:

Maintain the progress they made during the school year
Continue building communication confidence
Strengthen speech and language skills through regular practice
Prepare for a smoother transition back to school in the fall
Reduce frustration related to communication challenges
Support reading, learning, and social interaction skills

Summer speech therapy sessions are often designed to feel engaging and low-pressure, using games, conversation, movement activities, and child-centered interests to keep learning active while school is out.

Even short, consistent therapy sessions over the summer can make a meaningful difference in helping children stay on track and continue progressing toward their communication goals.

Have you had your chilld's hearing checked out lately?? If you have a child with unusual speech errors, and (like me) hasn't the faintest idea when your child last had a hearing test (mine probably kindergarten....do they still do that?) It is definitely worth checking their hearing status. If a child cannot hear a sound, they cannot pronounce a sound. They have no idea that they aren't making the same noise you are....unless they are also frustrated that you keep on correcting them when they are doing it "right". Just some food for thought... hear me out! 😂
