REBRANDERINGS #2

In the midst of a conversation with my designer about artwork and what I like and don’t like, I was suddenly asked what album covers have made a lasting impression on me. For some reason Shakedown Street by the Grateful Dead popped into my head. Since then I’ve spent literally hours trying to understand why. I suppose with music it’s all about time and place, and that must go for the covers also. One of my flatmates would have introduced this to our humble abode in the mid 80’s at some point, which would be about 7-8 years after the album was released. Happy days.

So let’s break it down.

Well for a start there is a stray dog in the middle of the picture. Let’s face it there’s nothing like seeing a stray dog anywhere that tells you you’re in a place with an edge. That dog will have a story to tell, probably a sad one, but it’s a survivor and while chaos seems to reign around it, it's quietly going about its business of sniffing out something to eat or, erm, love. The other characters in the scene build a picture of anarchic fun. There is undoubtedly some naughtiness going on but also a bit of pavement dancing and a waved greeting from a car bottom right. The other passers-by in the foreground are also having fun, but I don’t see any menace in them, just curiosity and craziness. A ‘shakedown’ of course is a police intervention - like a stop and search I guess - and halfway up the street a police car has pulled in and that’s exactly what’s going on. Nobody cares though, it’s just what happens on Shakedown Street, and life goes on. Power has somehow been reduced to something that is in the background - this place is ruled by the bums, the freaks and the dudes.

I love this sort of comic book artwork and how in this case it adds to the anarchic behaviour of those in the frame. It feels like you’re looking in on somewhere that is inviting you to come and experience. Somewhere where you can make your own rules and nobody cares too much about what they are. In some ways I think what is being depicted here is the ultimate outcome of the Woodstock era permeating what can sometimes feel like a suffocating city life. There's a freedom to it.

There's a freedom to adventure. I understood this properly during covid - that adventure is about going where you want, to do what you want, often with people that you want to be with. Doing your thing.

All we do at LMFF is provide superb filmed adventure content. You're free to pick your favourites, where and how you show them, what else you add to your event... that's all up to you and your crazy community.

REBRANDERINGS #1

It’s time for a rebrand and having found the right designer and the right direction, LMFF is fuelling its mojo with images and experiences that speak to its essence. That sounded like a load of poppycock at first but thirty seconds later it sounded like a great excuse to have a lie down, so here we go…

So for this first ‘Rebrandering’ - well, LMFF is a festival at heart and we’ve only just come back from End Of The Road Festival which is a fantastic music festival down in Dorset.

So why do we love EOTR so much?

Well, it’s independent of course, just like us, which I suspect is something that many people who love EOTR don’t even think about. Just as marketing can be subliminal, so can the absence of it. No logos, no ads, no branded merch … for some reason this is becalming, freeing, and adds to the spirit of the event.

We're there for the curated content and with busy heads like ours, live experiences are much better without being constantly assaulted by ‘activations’ and ‘samples’, unless of course they are of a musical sort.

Ask a customer - what are you actually getting that is better at a fully commercialised festival?

We’ve also been to Green Man Festival and we have friends who have been to Bearded Theory which we will check out at some point. All three are independent and their lineups are just as quality as the more commercial festival line-ups (we’ve been to these too) with the possible exception of some mega-acts at Glastonbury, which we're not that interested in anyway.

The ticket price doesn’t come down for sponsorship. The b**r seems to be a lot worse at the non-indies. The loos still stink. The only real difference is the profit the event makes is higher. Hurrah.

For us, the difference is in the way people talk about these events. There is a different level of affection, and a more truthful one, and a pride in being there.

Independent festivals are just the best, and we hope with all our heart that EOTR, Green Man, Bearded Theory and any other indie festivals out there can keep beating on forever.
