Pique-nique à Mirmande

André Lhote (1885 - 1962)

Oil on paper, laid down on canvas, signed. Painted in 1939
Paper size: 42 x 50in / 106 x 127cm
Frame size: 50.5 x 58.5in / 128 x 149cm

In 1925, André Lhote discovered Mirmande, a ruined Drôme village he helped revive by establishing a summer art school. His landscapes there beautifully reconcile Cubism with nature. Utilising structural geometry, simplified planes, and a vibrant palette of ochres and greens, he captured the region’s stone architecture and rolling hills with rhythmic, intellectual precision and immense local warmth.

Vonal-Feny

Victor Vasarely (1906 - 1997)

Acrylic on canvas, signed, titled and dated ‘VASARELY ”VONAL-FENY 1975 (on the reverse). Painted 1975 – 1992
Canvas size: 47 x 47in / 120 x 120cm

LITERATURE
The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Pierre Vasarely. This work will be included in the catalogue raisonné being prepared by the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence.

The ‘Vonal-Feny’ series (meaning “Line-Light” or “Line-Glow” in Hungarian), exemplifies Vasarely’s ‘kinetic plastic’ research. It uses a tightly controlled grid of repeating lines and shapes—often squares and circles—that diminish in size toward the center. This precise arrangement creates powerful optical illusions of pulsating movement, depth, and three-dimensional form on a flat surface, engaging the viewer’s perception actively.

Deux pots de géraniums

Bernard Buffet (1928 - 1999)

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1978.
Canvas size: 36 x 25.5in / 92 x 65cm
Frame size: 44 x 33.5in / 112 x 85cm

LITERATURE
This painting is sold with a photo-certificate of authenticity from the Galerie
Maurice Garnier, Paris

Bernard Buffet’s flower paintings juxtapose vibrant petals with his signature Miserabilist style. These still lifes feature sharp, elongated forms and heavy black outlines, transforming delicate blooms into somber, architectural subjects. Through jagged lines and flat perspectives, Buffet captures a haunting beauty, imbuing traditional floral compositions with modern, existential tension.
