The doors of Material Matters open tomorrow and to celebrate we have a bit of a treat.

For more than three decades, (the American Hardwood Export Council) has championed the performance, sustainability and aesthetic potential of American hardwoods worldwide.

At the fair, it presents Wood for the Trees, an immersive exhibition designed by and crafted by that traces the journey of hardwood timber from forest to finished product. It transforms the space into an abstract woodland, guiding visitors through five stages – Growth, Planning, Selection, Resilience and Timber.

Through tactile installations and audio-visual storytelling, visitors are invited not just observe but to engage – encountering timber, and the forests it comes from, in physical, spatial and sensory ways.

Blending design and craft with environmental insight, the exhibition reveals the structural, aesthetic and ecological value of American hardwoods, while underscoring the importance of responsible forestry and long-term sustainability.

At its core, Wood for the Trees is a meditation on care: for materials, for ecosystems, and for the long view – inviting a deeper connection to wood, and a more thoughtful approach to the future it shapes.

There are only two days to go until the opening of Material Matters Copenhagen. And we are delighted to welcome back Aifunghi. At the heart of the Dutch brand’s ethos lies Mycelium-Based Composite, an innovative material that combines h**p fibres with the natural binding power of mycelium. The result is a durable, beautifully textured material that is fully compostable and recyclable.

At the fair, launches its second collection. New designs include the Morchella chandelier by Vito Boox, the Tremella mirrors with polished stainless steel surfaces and mycelium-based frames, and three Eryngi lamps by Elisa Uberti, available as suspended, table, and floor versions.

Visitors can also expect five new line extensions, including a ‘naked’ version of the Banet chairs and Bolete side tables, both using a biodegradable resin finish to highlight the mycelium composite. Safe to say, we’re really looking forward to this one.

We only have three more exhibitors left to tell you about for this year’s Material Matters Copenhagen. And here’s a material we don’t often talk about on the platform…

Drop Paper is a very light, non-woven paper material, primarily used for events, trade fairs, exhibitions, and indoor architectural solutions. The material is known for its characteristic fibrous appearance, high dimensional stability, and its ability to interact visually with light.

One of the most frequently highlighted properties is its low weight combined with a high degree of flexibility. .dk can be cut, folded, and shaped without losing its visual expression, making it popular for banners, room dividers, ceilings, kakemonos, and decorative installations — both temporary and more permanent solutions.

The material’s fire-retardant properties make it suitable for use in public spaces and environments with stricter fire safety requirements, such as trade fairs, museums, and venues. For many designers and event producers, this combination of aesthetic qualities and technical performance is a key factor.

Our run down of exhibitors at this year’s Material Matters Copenhagen continues with Bundle Studio. .designstudio is a Copenhagen-based design studio working at the intersection of material research and industrial furniture production. The studio develops furniture and objects through a hands-on process where structure, material behaviour and construction define the final expression. Its practice includes ongoing work with natural fibre composites and bio-based adhesives.

At the fair, it will show the outcome of an ongoing investigation into bio-based adhesives through two lounge chair prototypes. The project explores NeoLigno, a lignin-based adhesive developed by Stora Enso as an alternative to conventional fossil-based binders used in wood products.

In many regards, NeoLigno behaves similarly to traditional veneer glues, enabling familiar techniques such as form-pressed veneer construction. However, the adhesive introduces a distinctive dark bond line. Rather than concealing this feature, the project works with it as an integral part of the design. The construction intentionally exposes the layered edge of the veneer, allowing the dark adhesive lines to become a visible part of the chair’s structure and expression.

Two prototypes are presented in birch and beech veneer. One highlights the contrast between light veneer and the dark adhesive, while the other is stained to reverse the relationship and emphasise the layered construction in a different way. It sounds fascinating doesn’t it??

It Friday again folks… and time for another exhibitor for Material Matters Copenhagen.

Only Natural is a global movement promoting the use of natural fibres in design. By connecting education, creativity and industry, it encourages the next generation of designers to place natural materials at the centre of future design practice.

At the fair, will present a curated selection of award-winning designs from its 2024 and 2025 International Student Design Competitions, showcasing how emerging talent from around the world is working with natural materials.

The featured projects span both fashion and home design and showcase the remarkable versatility of nature-based materials – from wool and leather to cherry wood, bamboo and traditional Urushi lacquer. Created by students from a range of design institutions around the world, these pieces highlight innovative approaches to craft, material intelligence and responsible production.

There’s a very special guest on the latest episode of the Material Matters podcast. Hella Jongerius has been one of the world’s most influential designers since she emerged as part of the Droog collective in 1993. Fascinated by the relationship between craft and industry, old and new technologies, by materials and colour, she has worked closely with a handful of manufacturers and companies, including and

Over the years, has also emerged as one of the field’s critical thinkers, taking careful aim at the design industry’s obsession with newness and over-reliance on marketing.

The first major retrospective of her career opened at the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein in March.

Hella and Grant talk about: the early years with Droog and her relationships with the likes of Jurgen Bey and Marcel Wanders; why materials are political; the culture of craft and avoiding the ‘path of nostalgia’; working with industry and trying to change it from within; her love of clay and textiles; colour as a communication tool; developing her critical voice; being ‘tough and sweet’; her fascination with animals; and exploring her spiritual side. It’s fascinating stuff.

Form in the Making is a new installation organised by the host of this year’s Material Matters Copenhagen, Ukraine House in Denmark, working alongside the Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers, and the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Denmark.

The feature will look at design and making at all scales in the war-torn nation and asks a string of pertinent questions including: what comes first – the idea or the method of its materialisation? Does technology determine the form of an object, or, conversely, does the form dictate the method of production? Is every design object potentially capable of being reproduced? And where does the boundary lie between a utilitarian object and functional art?

According to curators, Anait Danielian and Larysa Tsybina, the installation ‘proposes to consider form as a point of intersection between idea, material, and method of production’. Brands to look out for include: TheO, Tivoli, Yakush, DONNA, Ryntovt Design, KINT, ReStyle, Broox.

Material Matters Copenhagen runs from 10-12 June at .dk Gammel Dok and is part of 3daysofdesign. Make sure you register by downloading the app from the site.

Is it really Friday already? We round the week off with a couple of brilliant exhibitors for Material Matters Copenhagen.

Crafting Plastics! x Studio LoopLoop bring together expertise in biomaterial innovation and circular production to explore new material futures. develops bio-based polymers and regenerative material systems under the material name Nuatan, translating scientific research into scalable design applications. focuses on circular design processes, working with waste streams and plant-based resources to create material-driven objects and spatial experiences. Together, the studios investigate colour, light, texture and form through sustainable materials, bridging experimentation and application across interiors, lighting, product design and architecture, with a shared commitment to circularity and environmental responsibility.

At the fair, Crafting Plastics! will present its latest project Biocolumns – a hydroponic urban food growing system – while Studio LoopLoop will showcase Botanicus Reflect, its material and design project exploring entirely plant-based colours for lightweight aluminium luminaires and objects. The duo will also show a collaborative piece that brings together Crafting Plastics!’s biomaterial research with Studio LoopLoop’s circular production practice.
