The Jardin Majorelle 💙 is a two and half acre botanical garden and artist's landscape garden in Marrakech, Morocco. It was created by the French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle over almost forty years, starting in 1923, and features a Cubist villa designed by the French architect, Paul Sinoir in the 1930s. The property was the residence of the artist and his wife from 1923 until their divorce in the 1950s. In the 1980s, the property was purchased by the fashion designers, Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé who worked to restore it. Today, the garden and villa complex is open to the public. The villa houses the Berber Museum and has recently opened the Yves Saint Laurent Museum.

"The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus", 😴
Folio from a Falnama (Book of Omens)
1550s, Iran, Qazvin

This exceptionally large folio depicts seven Christian men, known as the Seven Sleepers and their dog Qitmir, who escaped persecution by miraculously sleeping in a cave for 309 years. The contrasts between the dark cave and the colorful rocks, the commotion outside and the peaceful sleepers inside reinforce the narrative. The crowned figure on a white horse, most likely the Roman emperor Decius (ruled 249-51 AD) who persecuted the men, is led by Satan, portrayed here with dark skin, a white beard and a serpent emerging from his neck. The picture would have faced a text page that contains a positive augury.

Looking forward to the weekend and catching up on much needed sleep! 😴🥳 Love how sweet and cosy these seven sleepers look in this beautifully illustrated Safavid painting.

It was a pleasure to be a part of this amazing short course on the Arts of Seljuk and Mongol Iran organised by at . Looking forward to the exciting courses offered in 2022 on Islamic and Indian art and curation.

Posted • We were very excited to hold our in-person Specialist Art Course: ‘Iran Under the Seljuks and Mongols’ this week. Here, the concluding lecture on curating Islamic Art with our Director Dr Malcolm McNeill, Behnaz Atighi Moghaddam & Robert and Carole Hillenbrand.

Alongside our full-time modules, our short courses have become an integral part of the Postgraduate Diploma’s programming.

These courses are open to all and aimed at students from a wide variety of backgrounds wanting to broaden their knowledge of specialised areas in Asian Art. Short courses are ideal for those who do not have the opportunity to attend our full-time programme and also serve as a taster to the longer modules. The courses enable us to specialise in specific areas which are not covered in depth within the Postgraduate Diploma modules.

Lectures are given by leading experts and curators and where appropriate we also include practising artists, musicians and object-study sessions.

Stay tuned for news on our future courses for 2022!

Tile from a frieze at the palace of Takht-i Sulayman with a moulded design, copper-green and cobalt-blue painted into the glaze, and lustre decoration painted over the glaze. The main scene depicts Bahram Gur, future king of Iran, out hunting with his favourite slave girl, the harpist Azadah. Bahram Gur fires a shot at a gazelle that scratches its ear with its foot. The arrow will pin the foot and the ear to the animal's shoulder.

Ilkhanid Iran, Kashan or Takht-I-Sulayman, circa 1275 Acc. no. 1841-1876

Lot 16 from our upcoming auction. Remarkable for the amount of original silver inlay which remains all over this magnificent candlestick🕯

If the construction of the six-lobed element on the body is unusual, the six-pointed star on the neck, the Seal of Solomon or Star of David motif, is much more so in its strength and prominence. While highly unusual, it is clearly potentially related to the two six-pointed stars in roundels that appear on the neck of the Siirt candlestick formerly in the Aga Khan and Nuhad Es-Said Collections, now in the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha.

While it may be coincidence, the mausoleum of Uljaytu is notable for the number of interlaced geometric patterns it includes. The interior stucco decoration includes very prominent massive six-pointed stars, sometimes containing roundels containing the interlaced repeated kufic name Muhammad, but sometimes plain, and dominant.

We do not as yet know for certain the precise origin of the present example. It is however undoubtedly an important and remarkable addition to this fascinating group of Iranian inlaid cast bronze candlesticks.
