Offered: Collection of Three Rare Prestige Hats. Kuba, Mbala and Ndengese Cultures, DRC. These three fine head adornments were first published in 2000 in ‘African Forms’ by Marc Ginzberg, a NY collector of African art. African Forms, a ground breaking book, was one of the first publications to draw attention to the beauty of African traditional items of every day use,non figurative or masks. Containers, hats, headrests, pipes, shields, basketry etc etc, were all featured in beautiful detail.
I have always been drawn to the beauty of such pieces, theirs pure form and function, and African Forms quickly become my go to book, for reference and inspiration.

If you are looking to acquire a collection of African head adornments of outstanding quality with great provenance, then these three recently acquired prestige hats might be for you. Each date to the 1st quarter of last century. For more details and price, go to the link on my bio.

Cast from nature! Two fine bronze 19th Century Akan gold weights, one cast from a peanut and the other from a small seed pod. They defy logic, showing amazing amount of detail, capturing the simple beauty of natural creations that we often don’t stop to take the time to admire. Typical to African art these artistic creations primarily had a functional purpose, acting as counter weights to gold in the 19th Century and before. Both are available, peanut £380 and seed pod £280. Each can be found on the website, link in the bio, under ‘Recent Acquisitions’

The beauty of fiber! These two rare fiber waste adornments would date to the first quarter of last century. Each is worn as a prestige adornment by two different cultures in the DRC. The longer belt with the fiber ball is called a ‘Libogi ’ and is worn of Bambole women of the Nkundo Culture with the ball sitting above the woman’s buttocks, when moving and dancing it would accentuate movement. The smaller banana fiber roll is extremely rare and forms part of the girls costume ‘Negbe’ it is worn as a symbol of prestige by women and girls of the Mangbetu culture as a frontal adornment, at the rear is worn a larger flat fiber disco shaped adornment with striking geometric designs. Both are recents acquisitions and are featured in my recently released catalogue, the link to which is in the bio. Prices for each can be found in the catalogue.

Offered. Early Double Headrest. Unknown Culture, (Possibly Gurage) Ethiopia. Such double headrests are rare to find amongst the huge variety of headrests that have come out of Ethiopia over the years. This is the first headrest of this form that I have handled in over 30 years. It has great age, solid and chunky, carved from a block of a dense brown wood with two sweeping double supports. The surface is deeply worn with a slightly oily texture. Estimated period: 2nd half 19th Century. Length - 46 cm. £1500. As a one off, or a must for a collection!

Available - Fantastic Late 19th/Early 20th Century House Post. Gurage Culture, Ethiopia
Carved from a dense and heavy hard wood with a lovely rich surface patina this fine house post has been surmounted by three ph***ic symbols to ensure fertility and protection within the traditional household. The post was also used as a form of partition marker to separate areas inside a traditional Gurage dwelling.
The surface of the post exhibits a lovely deep, glossy patina as a result of extensive handling and touching over the years. A beautiful interior design piece. £1200 (custom mounted). Height - 180 cm.

The power of animals in traditional healing in Tanzania. The wrapper lion fe**sh is from the Zigua, a culture who inhabit the Lushoto Mountains and the Tanga Region in the very north eastern part of Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border. The calabash container with giraffe head stopper, was used as a traditional medicine container and came from the Makonde in the southern region of Tanzania, close to the border of Mozambique. The two regions are nearly one thousand miles apart but demonstrate how wide spread the practice of traditional healing was (and still is) in Tanzania. Animals player an important role in the objects that were used in rituals by the traditional healer. They were thought to give power, strength and protection. Available (reluctantly), message me for more details WhatsApp +44 7939166148. **sh
