Taking a break from act announcements for some info on alienfreq’s refugee fundraising cause.
A refugee is someone who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted, is outside the country of their nationality. An asylum seeker is someone who has arrived in a country and asked for asylum.
Regardless of how they arrive, people who come to the UK seeking safety face a number of issues threatening their dignity and safety.
- Uncertainty: 76% of asylum seekers wait over 6 months for a decision.
- Hatred: Asylum seekers + refugees suffer horrific violence, attacks + racist abuse.
- Poverty + destitution: Banned from working or claiming benefits, asylum seekers struggle to survive on just £5.66 a day. Many are forced to live in housing that is crowded, damp + unsafe.
Reading Refugee Support Group helps refugees and people seeking asylum with practical help, education + more. Their OISC-accredited case workers offer free + confidential legal advice on immigration status, accessing benefits, housing, and social services.
I’ve tried to keep alienfreqs' purpose unpretentious and simple: we are artists who want to play and do something to support charities who have seen a massive dip in fundraising since the pandemic. Musicians, artists, organisers, all of us involved are doing this for free. The venue has (amazingly) been offered to us for free.
I made connections with Reading Refugee Support Group through serendipity: Inspired by , I fell into running a half-marathon for them, and their campaigns team have been great to work with. But I'm open to supporting others that are more locally based. While I have a film by beneficiaries from RRSG (which we are very excited about! soon to be announced), it would be great to work with live artists from refugee backgrounds in future, and if so, to pay them for their work.
It's all been a learning process. We are all going into this in the same spirit of experimentation and trying new things out, and trying to do something (aesthetically, acoustically, simply) good.
