Posted • NEW photos (credit Polka Theatre) of my intergenerational / 'family' /9+ play, Baki, which means 'the balance' or 'part left owing' in Bengali last month at .
Nicholas Khan playing Grandad and Michael Soukhan playing Grandson, directed by associate Gavin Joseph.
I first wrote Baki as an audio play that toured exhibitions in Bangladesh and England for 's ambitious awards nominated programme in 2022.
It's been so interesting translating something for the ears and mind into something visual and with movement - I have my lovely team to thank for diving into the text and pulling so much more out! Crafting it for children is a combination of reckless fun and meticulous care all at once, and, honestly, i think something great for kids has even more layers for grown-ups!
The audience reaction - tears and laughter in just the right measure - was that, making up the balance, the baki, is such a universal ache that affects us all - wherever we are and whatever our background.
What was particularly special here, that i was so grateful to witness, was the relationship between men - three generations of one family told through the simplest of stories when an old man and a teenage boy stop to have a chat and manage to find a way to find out what matters and help each other get through to the other side.
Thank you to everyone who came and who have helped me in various ways to write and develop this play, which is based on my father's life. thanks Abdul Shayek, .po
