Morden Park Choral

Morden Park Choral Morden Park Choral Society is a friendly community choir in SW19 Come and join us! We meet every Monday at St John's Church, High Path, in London SW19.

We are a friendly community choir of a range of abilities - there's no audition needed to join us. We welcome new members at any time, but especially as we begin rehearsals for a new season of delightful music and festive singing. We hold four concerts a year, in spring, summer, autumn and at Christmas, singing a well-chosen selection of beautiful secular and sacred music by composers ranging from

William Byrd to Henry Mancini. We rehearse from 7.30-9.30pm with a break for coffee, biscuits and a chat. We hold regular social gatherings.

Very proud of Morden Park Choral Society's performance at today. We opened the afternoon concert with William Byrd's elegant 'Teach Me, O Lord', followed by a rousing version of 'The Skye Boat Song', and closed with the upbeat 'Beyond the Sea'.

"Absolutely amazing." "Never heard you sing so well." The choir was back to rehearsals last night for the first time since our Spring concert, and it was lovely to hear the comments that some audience members had made to David, our conductor.

Well, that felt like it went well! Tonight's concert was a pleasure to sing in - we just hope the audience enjoyed it as much as we did.
Huge thanks to our conductor David Coram and accompanist David Gammie, congratulations to our soloists Elizabeth and Ray Hayter, and much appreciation to everyone who organised and worked on the door and catered.
See you at our summer concert!

It's time to put the word out - there are 19 days to go until our Spring Concert!
We have a gorgeous programme of sacred music, that includes William Byrd's soulful Ave Verum Corpus of 1605 and Handel's gloriously peremptory Zadok the Priest of 1727. More on the programme to follow...

This week brought the scarcely believable news that David Coram, our conductor, is celebrating 40 years as organist at All Saints Church in South Wimbledon. (The picture is David in his organist vestments.)
What a tremendous tally of service to music in Merton! Always good-humoured and patient, David is a musical polymath who has nurtured our choir through the gamut of music from William Byrd to "I do like to be beside the seaside", by way of Russian opera. I hope we've managed to give him even a fraction of the pleasure he has given us.
It seems a good moment to introduce David, so here he is in his own words:

"Born in Bristol, I read Classics at Durham University, specialising in Philology and Linguistics. In 1974 I took up a teaching post at Rutlish school where initially I taught Latin, but later a range of subjects including French, History, Music and RE. I left there in 1999 and then taught at Channing School in north London, negotiating the different challenges of teaching at a boys’ comprehensive school and a girls’ independent school! As far as music is concerned I was organist at St Marks in Wimbledon, later moving to All Saints, South Wimbledon where I recently celebrated 40 years in the post. I joined Morden Park Choral Society as an accompanist and have enjoyed my years as conductor. The singers are enthusiastic and keen to learn and I have been particularly impressed by the range of music we have covered over the years."

Good news - the Parish Office has confirmed that St John's Church, High Path, is available on Saturday 18 March, so that will be the date for our next concert.
We hold all our rehearsals at St John's as well as our concerts. The church has got a lovely acoustic, and it's easy to get as it's near South Wimbledon tube and the 93 route.
There's still time to join us before the Spring concert as we've only just started to rehearse the music. Come along on Monday at 7.30pm - you'll be welcome.
