Tens of thousands gathered in central London for two major demonstrations — the “Unite the Kingdom” anti-immigration rally linked to Tommy Robinson and a pro-Palestinian Nakba Day march. With tensions high, police launched one of the UK’s largest security operations in recent years, deploying 4,000 officers along with facial-recognition units, helicopters, dogs, and mounted police. Thousands of police officers were deployed across central London on Saturday as rival protests took place under tight security.

Authorities created a large buffer zone between Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, and Parliament Square to prevent clashes between the Unite the Kingdom march and pro-Palestinian demonstrators — a strategy that largely worked.

Police also used live facial recognition technology for the first time during protest policing at major London railway stations. By the evening, dozens of arrests had been made, including several linked to alleged hate crimes.

Despite heavy tensions and a massive police presence, the protests remained mostly contained, with attendance at the Unite the Kingdom rally estimated at around 60,000.

More than 50 MPs have now publicly urged Starmer either to resign immediately or set out a timetable for his departure
