Next week I’ll be launching NEO Music.
It will give me the freedom to release my music exactly how I want — mastering my tracks however I choose, creating the artwork myself, and deciding what gets released and when.
After losing 8TB of hard drive data (two 4TB drives, with one being the backup), I’m now left with 93 of my own tracks. Some of those are already on SoundCloud, but I’ll likely be uploading a lot more soon.
However, YouTube will be my primary platform. SoundCloud’s audio quality is poor, and nothing I release will go anywhere near Spotify. I’m not comfortable with my music being part of a system where revenue is tied to investment in weapons and arms industries.
A lot of the music I write is very experimental psytrance, and that doesn’t fit well with most labels, which tend to release very similar sounding material over and over again. Running my own label means I can release whatever I want without compromise — and this is clearly where the future of music is heading.
It also means I can experiment with different approaches to distribution, whether that’s giving a track away for free, making it stream-only, or even doing something unusual like selling a track for £100 (with only one copy available)
Realistically, streaming will probably make the most sense most of the time anyway. Almost nobody buys music anymore, and the music industry is still struggling to adapt. In many ways it remains stuck in outdated models that no longer reflect how people actually listen to music today.
NEO Music is about creative freedom and independence.
Tracks will be released in a series starting with NEO:001 (beyond the known limits), and below is the artwork I’ve created with the help of AI tools.
PS:
I apologize for going off the radar over the past ten months. I was going through some extremely difficult times and, frankly, I’m lucky to still be alive. But I’m back now and ready to move forward with my life and my art.
