Remembering David Hockney I 9 July 1937 - 11 June 2026

Bernard Jacobson Gallery is deeply saddened by the passing of David Hockney, one of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Hockney worked on several projects with Bernard Jacobson from the 1960s onwards, with Bernard describing David as “the most successful artist who carries no airs or graces, just a down-to-earth Yorkshireman.”

For the 41st edition of the London Original Print Fair, Bernard Jacobson Gallery presents a survey of prints by William Tillyer, an artist who has worked closely with Bernard Jacobson Gallery for over 50 years.
The Gallery will also present works by artists including Georges Braque, Patrick Caulfield, John Constable, Howard Hodgkin, Henri Matisse, Bruce McLean, Robert Motherwell and Richard Smith.

David Bomberg’s 1953 painting ‘Mother of Venus’ draws from Diego Velazquez’s 17th century work, ‘The Rokeby Venus’, which Bomberg frequently visited in London’s National Gallery. ’The Rokeby Venus’ features a reclining n**e woman in a bright, open room. Though she lays with her back to the viewer, she peers into a looking glass, and so allows viewers to see her face. As a result, the subject offers an inviting atmosphere, seductively drawing viewers in despite her body turned away. While Bomberg enlists the same format as his 17th century predecessor—depicting a n**e woman laying on a surface with her back to us—he invokes his own expressive style and shifts the perspective to create an isolating atmosphere and an inaccessible subject.

Instead of painting the lavish and naturalistic atmosphere seen in ’The Rokeby Venus', Bomberg renders his subject in simple lines and surrounded by darkness. With no mirror for viewers to see her face, and with her head resting not in her hands but on a pillow so dark it barely registers, the woman leaves viewers wondering if she lays awake or asleep, if her face bares emotion or stoicism. Her skin exacerbates this inaccessibility: the dips and peeks of her yellow-orange figure like hills in a dessert; the cracks along her skin, a result of Bomberg’s overpainting, like a dehydration so intense that the slightest touch will make her fall apart.

The woman depicted in ‘Mother of Venus’ most likely identifies as Bomberg’s wife, the artist Lilian Holt. Created in 1953, when the two experienced a brief separation in their marriage, the painting seems to express the artist’s grieved sentimentality. His mournful rendering of his wife shows the isolation he feels from her, inaccessible even in the most intimate settings.

William Tillyer: A Survey of Prints

Bernard Jacobson Gallery announces its participation in the 2026 edition of the London Original Print Fair, hosted at Somerset House. The gallery will present a survey of prints by William Tillyer, an artist who has worked closely with Bernard Jacobson Gallery for over 50 years. The survey ranges from Tillyer’s early 1970s prints to his most recent series, ‘The Red Bridge’, made earlier this year.
