MOCA London presents In Translation, a new tapestry by Jacqueline Poncelet, realised in collaboration with master weaver Caron Penney of Atelier Weftfaced. The exhibition brings together the finished tapestry with the original watercolour on paper (64 x 84 cm) from which it was developed, inviting visitors to consider how an artwork changes as it moves from one medium to another.

The two formed a working friendship that produced Poncelet’s new work In Translation (01). Over the period of a year Poncelet monitored the delicate process of first making the thread that would be woven (up to three threads of different colours of fine wool twisted together into a thicker one that could be woven). Originally Poncelet wanted to use a section of her larger watercolour collage that included a white ragged seam (the torn edge of one piece of paper against another field of watercolour) but this proved to be too dominant within the composition. So Poncelet shifted her focus in the drawing to a smaller rectangle that was then used as the cartoon for the final work.

Viewers at MOCA London will be able to see the final woven work and the original collage and see for themselves how close to the original the woollen translation is. But it is just that, a translation, not of the whole work by Poncelet, but a tight visual selection that she made. Penney began by translating the work into a cartoon at a larger scale, that might then be translated into wool. In each step away from the original Poncelet had to keep the feel of the watercolour at the core of the process and the outcomes.

Water itself has become her latest translation collaborator.

We’re happy to announce that our current exhibition, Silvia Ziranek - BY A THREAD, will have a finissage on 5th July 2pm - 4pm. This will include live readings at 3:15pm.

Ziranek’s project at MOCA London comprises BY A THREAD incorporating UNSUNG SONGS, a multi-media exhibition combining beautifully and economically made sculpture and the written word. BY A THREAD is a new, large scale (over 10 foot) mobile that will dominate the gallery space, making ingenious use of everyday materials, combining text with textiles (carpet tiles, wallpaper, picture frames). Through poetry, text-in-textiles, and installation Ziranek addresses violent, abusive behaviour towards women and girls and focuses on offering strength through solidarity and acknowledging others’ experiences by finding words and ways of opposing emotional and physical abuse.

Silvia Ziranek BY A THREAD
incorporating UNSUNG SONGS 1 May - 5 July 2026
Opening Event: Sunday 31 May 2pm - 4pm
Readings at 2.30pm and 3.40pm

MOCA London is pleased to present new work by Silvia Ziranek, a well-established multi-media artist with a strong performance art focus. She has performed across the UK, Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand, including at the Venice Biennale; Tates Modern and Britain; Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris; Modern Art Oxford and Plug-In, Winnipeg.

Ziranek’s project at MOCA London comprises BY A THREAD incorporating UNSUNG SONGS, a multi-media exhibition combining beautifully and economically made sculpture and the written word. B.A.T. is a monumental mobile suspended from the gallery ceiling. It displays textile panels containing single words and phrases from UNSUNG SONGS; a wall text ‘THE MY SCAR’; and an audio recording of the 15 SONGS. Derived from personal experience Ziranek’s poems, always spoken (never sung) address vulnerability, aggressive male hierarchy and emotional un/intelligence. Ziranek hopes to empower women and girls by creating a provocative arena for contemplation.

Next week we’re delighted to be hosting the book launch of 12 Untitled, by Marisa Culatto at MOCA London. This will coincide with Photo London.

With 12 Haiku by Yuzo Ono
Tuesday 12 May 2026
6 pm - 7.30pm

Marisa Culatto and Yuzo Ono first met a few years ago through a collaboration on a visual art and haiku exhibition organized by a London gallery. Their initial conversations developed into a dialogue, during which Ono expressed a particular interest in Culatto’s 12 Untitled works. From this exchange, the idea for this book was born: Ono would compose twelve haiku, each responding to one of Culatto’s twelve Untitled pieces. These works were originally commissioned by MOCA London as part of their 2020 WE (Web Exhibitions) program.
