Laakkuluk Williamson is an award-winning Greenlandic-Canadian Inuk artist whose practice spans performance, lens-based media, sculpture and installation.

For her first ever solo show, Nuliaminik Neqilik brings together works that explore timely issues around access to and control over indigenous belongings, bodies and territories in the circumpolar region.

It has involved significant international institutional partnerships including a loan from the National Gallery of Canada and the British Museum has facilitated access to some of the Inuit belongings currently held in their collection, reinterpretations of which also form part of the exhibition.

On loan from the National Gallery of Canada National Gallery of Canada, Nannuppugut! was created for the Sobey Art Award exhibition - Canada’s largest art prize equivalent to the Turner Prize, which Laakkuluk was awarded in 2021.

The work was created to honour the spirit of the polar bear harvested by the artist in defence of her family at their cabin in Nunavut. This presentation features a canvas replica of the original bear pelt. Reliance on the land, water and animals of Inuit Nunangat (Inuit homelands) is a central theme in Laakkuluk’s work and way of living.

Hear from Laakkuluk Williamson on her series ‘Niriqatigiitta!: Eating From the Multitudes’ (2020 - 2025)

“Beading is a sensual experience, picking up one tiny, rounded, and colourful piece of glass to create a carpet of imagery. I make images in collaboration with my children, because I want them to direct and affect what I make, as I sit there for a very long time, to create these pieces. I want my children to be empowered by our family experiences on the land. And to know that art-making is a family endeavour.”

For today’s Friday Five, we are highlighting 5 historic Zines and journals from the USA! 📕

🌙On Our Backs (USA, 1984 to 2006)
On Our Backs was the first women-run erotica magazine and the first magazine to feature le***an erotica for a le***an audience in the United States.

💥 Homocore (USA, 1988-1991)
A key publication in the q***rcore movement, Homocore was produced by Tom Jennings and Deke Nihilson. It featured interviews, art, and manifestos that merged punk aesthetics with q***r politics.

✨S.C.U.M. Manifesto (USA, 1967)
By Valerie Solanas, the S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto is a radical feminist text that influenced feminist theory and art, particularly in the context of the 1960s women’s liberation movement.

🌊 Le***an Tide (USA, 1971-1980)
Le***an Tide covered political issues, personal stories, and cultural critiques, contributing to the visibility and empowerment of le***ans during a pivotal time in LGBTQ+ history. It was the first le***an periodical in the US to reach a national audience and the first US magazine to use the word “le***an” in the title.

💫Riot Grrrl (USA, 1991)
While the Riot Grrrl movement produced many zines, the original Riot Grrrl zine by Allison Wolfe, Molly Neuman, and others, was a publication that helped launch the feminist punk movement, encouraging women and q***r voices in the punk scene.

This is the first week of . Today, as every day, we celebrate pride. 🏳️‍🌈

Pride Month is annually observed in June, to coincide with the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots.

This year, Pride feels especially urgent. Around the world, LGBTQ+ rights are under growing attack, with Trans+ people facing particularly harmful rhetoric, policies, and violence.

At Mimosa House, we stand with LGBTQ+ communities this month and always.

Our current exhibition’s title “Nuliaminik Neqilik - The Flesh of Wives” and central piece of work – a mixed media installation Nuliaminik Neqilik – comes from a Greenlandic story of Igimaarasussuaq, a cannibal who ate the flesh of his wives, and the revenge of his last wife Masaannaaq, who grew to an immense size.

In this new work, Laakkuluk champions the voice of Masaannaaq as an emancipated protagonist.

Colonialism, patriarchy, capitalism and racism subjugate, dehumanise and exclude racialised women. In Nuliaminik Neqilik, Laakkuluk focuses on corpulence, body image and strength as a way to own space.

Open until 7 June 2026, Nuliaminik Neqilik: The Flesh of Wives, is a solo exhibition of works by Laakkuluk Williamson , and curated by Taqralik Partridge .

⏰ We are open 12-6pm, Wednesday to Saturday!
