Many thanks to everyone who came to last night’s opening of Critical Edge #5. I was too busy talking to people all evening to get many photos, but if you are in London for the bank holiday weekend I do hope you will come and see this extremely accomplished and provocative show for yourself.
It was such a pleasure researching and completing the work for this exhibition, and I’m very grateful to have been asked to take part as a guest artist with
The pieces I have on show are for sale (image 4), so please DM me if you would like any more details.

Rug designs. I tend to draw my rug designs with coloured pencil in the first instance, sometimes painting a further design with watercolours or gouache.
There is something about the immediacy of pencils as a medium that I like, but I always think the results look a little childish (although that’s probably more to do with my skill level than the medium!). But there’s also a nostalgic feel to them but I appreciate.

Beginnings..

I have been teaching people how to weave for over over seven years, and it is one of the most rewarding parts of my practice; often, students present an approach or idea that surprises me, and allows me to see my craft in a slightly differently way, someway.
Also, the life of a weaver/artist can be a lonely one , and so the classroom can be an invaluable place to exchange ideas, talk about our work and get feedback.
So, it is with enormous pleasure that I can announce that will be teaching a weekly weaving class at Hampstead School of Art from the 28th of this month. Using frame looms to begin with, I am really excited to be able to share my knowledge with students at the school, and support them as they begin to engage with the language and physicality of weaving, and create woven works of art.

There are still some places left on this terms class so don’t delay booking if you are interested in taking part…

‘Iterations’ - works in progress (oil on board)

Don’t worry, I haven’t given up weaving, but I have been exploring oil painting recently, taking some of my designs for rugs and wall hanging and transposing them onto another surface.
Much of my work is about process and identity, and I see this move from one surface to another as an evolution of ideas and form. Part of what I love about making textiles is that the process is there for everyone to see in the finished product. I have tried to adopt a similar idea with my painting. But because the processes are new, they become a new way of exploring existing ideas, changing the form and the work into something else.
As we enter into another year I find myself considering these ideas and trying to shoehorn them into a design for living….oh dear, Plus ca change? Happy New Year all!
