At the end of July I presented at the Singer and the Self Voice Pro Holiday in Slovenia, organised with so much heart by the incredible Becky Gilhespie of Singer & the Self Retreats.
Colleagues from around the world, so many beautiful souls. Fellow presenters shared work on contemporary singing through an acoustic lens with Becky Gilhespie, business as your art with Rachel Lynes, cycle-informed vocal coaching with Lindsay Dalton, Resisted Inhalations with Michael Dahl Rasmussen, voice, stress and the nervous system with , pressure regulation and airflow with Barbara C Tanze, pricing and positioning with gemma sugrue, student wellbeing with Cat Ogden Singing, performance anxiety with .toy_vocalcoach, storytelling and free singing with hodgsondrama, and hypermobility with Alien Partljič. More wisdom from Alexa Terry, Laura Boon, Vocalzone, Chris Richardson Emily - Vocal Coach & Vocalist and more.
My talk was Voices of Heritage: Exploring the Power of Native Language in Singing. Drawing on conversations with singers and coaches from different backgrounds, it explored how our first language shapes our instrument before we sing a note; tongue position, breath pattern, larynx height; and how singing in a heritage language can offer an emotional shortcut, though not guaranteed. We talked about identity, whose voice gets permission to sound as it naturally does, and how much of “correct” technique is just one culture’s preference dressed up as universal truth. My hope for the room: treat a student’s native language as a diagnostic, not a deficiency: codify what works, then transfer it. Every accent, every heritage language a singer carries in isn’t something to smooth away. It’s information. 🎙️
Thank you so much to all the colleagues who shared their stories with me!
Beyond the talks we learnt, laughed, cried, swam, sauna’d, wandered Ljubljana, and took a cable car and chairlift to Velika Planina. Many brought family, the perfect blend of work and play.
So grateful for this community. 🇸🇮✨
