‘There is a connection between magic, sorcery and painting. I do not believe in witchcraft and all that, but I think there is something very exclusive and secretive about the fact of painting.’ - Artist Martin Eder. Paint Mixing
''Paintings are illusions: a slurry of colours smeared across a scrap of cotton fabric using animal hairs attached to a little piece of wood. A shallow sculpture made from layers of paint. It’s all about the creation of illusions'' - Martin Eder

Martin Eder - Painting
Eder states that the sources for his paintings – smut, cute animal pictures, plastic flowers, pseudo-religious iconography, post-apocalyptic or celestial skies – are selected ‘in order to fulfil platitudes.’ These motifs appeal in part because of their ubiquity and in part because they reveal the arbitrariness of societal standards.

Martin Eder - Painting Purple
‘I scratch my paintings on purpose.’
-
Eder is inspired by other artists such as Edvard Munch, who left his paintings outside in the open for months, so as to connect them to the earth. In his quest to represent this authenticity in his own works, Eder coats his works in heavy varnish, as well as scratching their surfaces in order to allow his works to appear more authentic.

Varnishing the Cat
"I set out to choose the stupidest subjects in order to fulfil platitudes and create images that everyone understands or is familiar with. When you have the stupidest subjects – whether it’s baby animals, nudity or internet porn – things that everybody knows, you have the characters, but it is only then that you can really get started with the scenery, the dramaturgy." - Artist Martin Eder.

The Alchemy of Painting
"Many of my works are located in a dream state – otherworldly conditions that produce drama and tension. The protagonists become ghosts, they are just placeholders." - Martin Eder

Martin Eder looking through sketchbook in the studio
Artist Martin Eder first emerged in the mid 90s, over a decade after the explosion of expressionistic figurative styles expounded by German artists. Eder, however, looked to traditional painting techniques and historical movements – such as the Baroque and Romanticism – to hone his unique practice, in which extreme realism and off-key set pieces combine with disturbing results.
