Craft travel is a unique opportunity for artists to engage with patrons and collectors from different parts of the world. I’m really looking forward to welcoming Isabelle Fish and the in February - they are from Canada and the US and exploring London through the medium of paper. I love that material base approach to travel.

Images showing Winter’22 Flowers of Resistance. Work in progress and details.

This work covers stories from December 2021 to March 2022. Stories of peace and war dominate, with the invasion of Ukraine and it’s fierce resistance against Russia, providing the theme that carries through this work. These flowers remind us of the love (the Dec 24th wedding of Ukrainian soldiers, as Russian troops gathered at the boarder), hope (a child singing “Let it Go” in a bomb shelter), inspiration (the Snake Island boarder guards “Russian Warship, Go F*** Yourself”), and heartbreak (the siege of Mariupol) of the first months of the year- just as Britain was beginning to emerge from Covid registrations and the world was gathering for the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

These are prints of the handmade raffia Embellished Notifications series I made earlier this year. Inspired by tech notifications that bring you joy. This one seemed appropriate for this year’s card.

Thank you to everyone who came to visit last week in Suffolk, I really appreciate your time! It was so much fun meeting Orford residents, local artists, holiday makers and having friends and family there. I loved every minute.

Thank you Frances / for all your support leading up to and during the show. You’ve made a perfect space for artists to show. So easy to instal, great lighting and facilities, and what a location!

Sometimes we need a break from the news…. I’ve been embroidering notifications that bring you joy for a new series of work that I’ll be showing alongside my The News Pressed work at The Watch House Gallery, Orford Quay, Suffolk.

‘CLEAR SKIES FAIR WINDS’

1-6 July

EMBELLISHED NOTIFICATIONS are a satirical fusion of modern, technological communications with hand-made practice.
Created out of a need to find humor and irony in the tumult of this era, Kate Lewis has captured these modern, digital flashes in analog cross-stitch, so they may continue to bring joy long after the digital buzz has faded.

A literal twist on the way information is communicated and the world we currently live in—these works take the intimate personalisation of corporate messaging and turn it upside-down. Reflecting on Lewis’ background in textile design, these hand-made works—raffia cross-stitched on perforated paper—pay homage to the sampler, which was historically sewn by women as a distinctive reference work. Fleeting messages have been turned into pithy conversation pieces. Cheeky double (and triple) meanings make the universal personal.
