‘Holly Tree' by Michael Johnson -
Drawing from life on 63 pieces of A4 paper
-
Michael Johnson completed a degree in Fine Art at Reading University, followed by a Postgraduate Scholarship at Byam Shaw School of Art. He has been painting and drawing for over 30 years, exhibiting widely in solo and group shows.

‘Holly Tree’ is one of many Pandemic inspired works by Michael Johnson, made outside, one A4 sheet at a time from multiple viewpoints. It is simply an attempt to reflect his love of trees, the Holly in particular, and to create something positive in challenging times.

Windows and reflection series by Jenny Stevenson -
Collage on paper
-
Jenny Stevenson loves to combine paper engineering with collage and uses repetition alongside playful elements to show narrative in her intricate handmade books. Her inspiration comes from exploring new locations, and she has a fascination with buildings.

"I like to discover the story in a place, the history, the feeling of
visiting it or how people live - remnants of a past life."

Jenny's background has had a significant influence on her work. Her love of the miniature and meticulous craftsmanship is something she shares with her father, a model maker. As a child, she created items for her doll's house or make model kits and shoebox rooms. Jenny studied BA (Hons) in Visual Studies from Norwich School of Art and Design, graduating in 2000 and has worked for many years as an Art Technician at secondary schools in London and Nottingham. She now lives and works in Derby in her home studio, producing in pockets of time around her young children.

Studio set-up for the ‘24 Hours in the Workroom’ project by Kris Bartosova ts
Forty-eight A4 and A3 screen prints
-
Kris is a graduating artist from Manchester School of Art, just finishing her final year of Fine Art and Curating. She specialised in print-making and screen printing stems from my interest in exploring colour theory and play but also the labour that surrounds printing as well as embracing its unpredictability and mistakes.

This installation is composed of 48 prints (24 A4 and 24 A3) all screen-printed with a mix of leftover inks in the Manchester School of Art’s print room, the shapes printed on top of each over until no more white paper is seen on the surface. Through the labour of printing and the constant repetition of the process, mistakes became a natural part of the prints, adding definition and honest human touch to the beautiful process that is screen printing, which has been almost made obsolete due to machinery.

‘Twenty-five Meditations on a Circle’ by Philip Copestake - no
Pencil on paper
-
Philip has made art for as long as he can remember - not just as a hobby, but a passion. A scientist by training, he has had no formal art education, although over the years has attended classes in numerous prestigious universities.

Philip is constantly fascinated by the creative process, and in particular the notion of ‘mark-making’ - how visual marks, both intuitively and precisely placed, are interpreted and can frequently initiate a deeply emotional response. His practice largely encompasses drawing (using pencil, charcoal, graphite, pen & ink), painting, and printmaking (relief, intaglio, mono-print, and ink-transfer) – mainly small works on paper. He loves both the technical and serendipitous aspects of creating art. He works with a diverse range of subjects, from abstract and pattern, figurative, botanical, to landscape. He also finds the process of making art a deeply meditative one, and as a qualified yoga teacher as well, will often combine creative ideas in his yoga teaching and in retreats that he runs with his partner.

Oil on Paper, handpulled limited edition silkscreen print
-
Marek Tobolewski lives and works in Nottingham and is a resident artist at Primary.

He deals within both the formal process of abstraction in painting and drawing today and its historical continuity. A constant across all the work is the linear thread of inter-connecting arcs of a circle, forever evolving congruent forms creating symmetry and incorporating portals, in an attempt to find that space between movement of a line and stillness.

‘Nova Scotia I’ by Deborah Hercun -
Cyanotype on paper
-
Deborah worked in publishing for over twenty years as a managing editor, managing the process from concept to finished book. Since she left publishing in 2019, and has taken various courses and workshops, and is currently in an advanced printmaking group at Morley College.

Given her peripatetic background, she has a great interest in fragments and multiple perspectives – literally and figuratively. She loves taking photographs that don’t have a conventional angle, leaving the viewer to ponder for an extra second or two about what they are seeing. An everyday scene turned oddly abstract. Her passion for photography found printing techniques to be the perfect partners, where ‘making strange’ is taken a step further, and where she never makes two prints the same.

‘Connection 6.7’ by Robert Padley -
Oil on paper, 6x10"
-
Highly disciplined and dedicated to experimentation, Rob current practice explores the relationship between paint and movement and the way oil paint behaves when repeatedly applied in horizontal and vertical layers, a bit like weaving with paint. He is influenced by graphical elements such as maps and pixelated images, and recreate these using unique painting processes while also representing landscapes that I find inspirational such as seascapes and foggy edgelands.

‘Landscape Series I, N•5’ by Francis Allwood -
Collage made from pre-printed monoprints
-
Francis Allwood grew up on a family farm and have a deep-rooted love of animals and the outdoors. Consistently inspired by nature, sometimes with a hint of narrative and always founded upon a love of drawing, her work is handprinted at home on a traditional etching press.
She loves little details in nature - be it the curl of a bull’s forelocks, a dimple in a chicken’s comb or the simple forms in the centrepiece of a buttercup once the petals have fallen.
Whilst studying Illustration at Kingston University she fell in love with printmaking - captivated by the smells, touch and rhythm of print. She focuses largely on intaglio processes with a particular interest in mezzotint, hand rocking copper plates to the rich velvety black that is unique to mezzotint, and then bringing images to life with specialist tools in the dark to light method - a particularly magical process.

‘The Morning After’ by Niamh Birch -
Oil stick, oil paint, gouache, charcoal, oil pastel and collage on paper, 50 x 71cm
-
Niamh Birch is an English/Irish Painter who grew up in North Devon but is now based in London.

Her thick luscious paint and harsh black marks are beautifully juxtaposed by the cheerful and somewhat humorous element her work. Her paintings reference the historical motif of the ‘still life’ whilst her technique is emotive and representative rather than precise. Somewhat reminiscent of Picasso in their juvenility whilst her use of colour and texture is considered. The work feels both precious and expressive.

'One August Day' by Becky Paterson -
Gouache on cotton rag paper
-
Having attended Art College when leaving school and then going on to complete my degree in surface pattern design, I went on to work in a busy publishing studio, as an artist designing greeting cards.

Always passionate to create, led me to start my own small business.

My work is very much inspired by nature and the beautiful surrounding countryside where I live. I am forever collecting inspiration or taking photographs on the many walks I do with my two dogs.

I work mostly with ink and each piece is delicately hand painted or printed here in my lovely studio in Buckinghamshire.
