This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Valerie Beston Artist’s Trust Award. To celebrate this milestone we wanted to go down memory lane and have created a digital catalogue including all past winner of the prize.

Do you know what brings together these two jazzy motifs?

Almost 100 years ago, Aaron Douglas provided the cover illustration for Wallace Thurman’s ‘The Blacker the Berry’. About 20 years later, Henri Matisse published ‘Jazz’, also inspired by the Haarlem Renaissance of which Douglas was a central figure.

These silhouettes combine to create the sculpture ‘Icarus in the Sunlight’, 2024, by Hank Willis Thomas (b. 1976), currently on display until 24 July at our exhibition ‘Red’.

Last week we had the honour of hosting a walk-through of our current exhibition ‘Dialogues’ led by Dame Magdalene Odundo and Sir Ben Okri. The exhibition closes on Friday 12 Dec at 6pm; please make haste so you don’t miss it!

‘Dialogues’, our current exhibition, is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue which includes a specially commissioned poem by Philippe Peltier, Conservateur general honoraire du patrimoine at the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac in Paris, who contributed to the catalogue for the landmark exhibition ‘“Primitivism” in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern’ which opened at MoMA in 1984.
