🌱 Errol’s Garden has always been about more than a performance - it’s about giving children space to imagine, create, and grow.

During Covid, when so many families were at home and live theatre wasn’t possible, we set up Errol’s Garden themed craft and planting activities for children to do at home. These simple projects invited families to bring a little of the story into their own spaces - planting seeds, making gardens from everyday materials, and finding creative ways to keep the story alive together.

It became a way to stay connected at a time when connection mattered most. Children weren’t just watching the story - they were growing it in their own hands.

That spirit of care, creativity, and resilience continues to run through the work today, and we’re delighted that the audiobook has now been shortlisted for the The Week Junior Audio Book Awards.

🌱 Because of our nomination for the The Week Junior Audio Book Awards, we've been looking back at the journey that brought us here.

Like the garden at the heart of the story, Errol's Garden didn't grow overnight.

The journey began at The Albany, Deptford. It was originally due to open in 2020, but like so many projects at the time, it had to be cancelled as Covid restrictions came into place.

When communities eventually began to gather again, Errol's Garden opened in The Albany's garden, with socially distanced seating on individual mats that were carefully sanitised between each performance. During this first year of touring, we even had visits from Public Health to check that we were following guidelines - we had to learn to make theatre in this new world.

It wasn't always easy, but those early challenges echoed one of the show's central messages: when things don't go to plan, find the courage to try again.

We’re absolutely thrilled to share that the Errol’s Garden audiobook has been nominated for Children’s Audiobook of the Year at The Week Junior Book Awards 2026 🌿🎧

What began as a stage adaptation of Gillian Hibbs’ much-loved picture book has grown into something truly special for us at Golden Toad Theatre - the stage show has traveled across the UK and visited Singapore, reaching over 18,000 children, and finding new life as an audio musical.

This nomination means so much to the whole team who brought it to life, from Caroline Wigmore, Jen Green and Kate Golledge, to Josh Sood, our brilliant cast Nicholas McLean and Grace Mouat, and everyone who helped shape Errol’s world along the way. The audiobook was recorded with music at Auburn Jam Studios and dialogue at Small Wardour.

Most of all, thank you to every audience member, teacher, and family who has joined Errol on his journey -this story has always been about growing communities as much as growing gardens.

Errol’s story started with a rooftop… and it’s still growing 🌱
