The clear skies in the Cedarberg this weekend provided a fantastic opportunity to for some astrophotography. The Milky Way is most visible during the winter months, but there was still plenty to photograph.

The two bright, smaller cloud-looking regions are not weather clouds, but rather the Small and Large Magellenic clouds - dwarf galaxies that orbit our galaxy, the Milky Way.

See if you can also spot the Southern Cross.

One thing I'm learning as a novice photographer is balancing the desire to take photos of everything with the desire to be present in the moment and not look at everything through a screen or lense.

This balancing act is made tougher when you are exploring with a group of friends and do not wish to irritate them with the constant stop-starts to take a snap. Sometimes you're forced to take a picture without perfectly configuring your camera beforehand.

Despite this, every so often, however, you capture an imperfect but unexpectedly beautiful shot such, as this one. It reminds how not everything in life needs to be perfectly planned for it to be rewarding.

Shadows and light in Deer Park.

Located minutes from the city centre, Deer Park is a particularly beautiful place to have a walk, bring your dogs or have a picnic.
