Where does a set go after the final applause? ♻️

When an audience looks at a stage, they see the finished story. What they don’t see are the modular systems, the precise 3D pre-design, and the 'design for disassembly' principles that ensure those scenic elements have a life long after the show closes.

Real sustainability in theatre means making circular production and material reuse part of our standard practice, proving that environmental ambition never has to compromise creative intent.

Head of Production to join our leadership team.

We’re looking for someone who shares our ambition to continually improve how we work.

About the Role

As Head of Production, you will oversee the delivery of projects across our production teams, maintaining a clear view of schedules, resources and financial performance, while supporting the development and wellbeing of the teams you lead.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading, mentoring and developing the Projects Team, Workshop Manager and Heads of Department.
- Driving effective communication across departments through project meetings, handovers and debriefs.
- Overseeing project delivery, ensuring schedules, resources and milestones remain on track.
- Reviewing and improving production processes to increase efficiency, quality and consistency.
- Building a collaborative culture focused on teamwork, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Monitoring project profitability through effective resource planning, material utilisation and close collaboration with Project Managers, the Workshop Manager and subcontractors.
- Using project data and reporting to support informed decision-making and commercial performance.
- Planning and allocating production resources alongside Project Managers and the Workshop Manager.
- Managing capital investment to maintain and enhance production facilities, equipment and capabilities.
- Ensuring robust health & safety standards across project delivery and workshop operations.
- Championing sustainable production practices, reducing waste, maximising reuse and improving resource efficiency.

Today, we’re celebrating International Literacy Day 📚✨

Without great writing, there would be no stories to bring to the stage, no productions to lose ourselves in, and no sets for us to create and build.

Theatre starts with storytelling, and we’re lucky to have worked on some incredible productions with brilliant stories at their heart. Here are just a few of our most recent ones:

- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Royal Caribbean Cruises: Book by David Greig, based on the novel by Roald Dahl.
- The Oresteia at the Bridge Theatre: Simon Stone’s adaptation of Aeschylus's classic trilogy, exploring the enduring cycles of human warfare and families tearing themselves apart.
- Under the Shadow at the Almeida Theatre: Reimagined by Carmen Nasr, based on Babak Anvari’s BAFTA-winning horror film.
- One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at the Old Vic Theatre: Adapted by Dale Wasserman, based on Ken Kesey’s countercultural masterpiece novel.
- Summerfolk at the National Theatre: Originally by Maxim Gorky, presented in a new version by Nina Raine and Moses Raine.

From the workshop to Wonka’s world 🍭

There’s something special about seeing months of making, testing and problem-solving finally come to life in rehearsals.

For Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the set had to do much more than look magical. Elements had to move, open, close, travel across the stage and work seamlessly within the production, all while being designed for the unique demands of a cruise ship environment.

From the famous boat, engineered to move across the stage, to interactive set pieces with their own working mechanisms, every detail played a part in creating the larger-than-life world audiences expect from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

We’re proud to have played a part in bringing this iconic production to the stage for Royal Caribbean Cruises on board Legend of the Seas, working alongside the incredibly talented designer Andy Walmsley and his amazing team.

Behind the scenes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory took over our workshop 🍫⚙️

Our team spent months bringing Wonka’s world to life, making sure every moving part captured the magic of the show through its colour, scale, movement and functionality.

With a production like this, every scenic element matters, and the team did an incredible job making each piece feel every bit as magical as the world it belongs in.

Texture can make a newly built surface appear aged, turn lightweight materials into convincing stone or metal, and subtly influence the mood and atmosphere of an entire production.

We spoke with scenic artist Samantha Fellows about the art of texture and why it remains such an important part of scenic design, even when audiences may not consciously notice it.

Meet the team member that deserves a shout-out 👋

It may not join the weekly team meetings, but our CNC cutting machines has been an important part of the Scott Fleary team for more than 20 years!

It allows us to cut sheet materials with incredible precision, creating everything from intricate organic shapes to one-off components that fit together like an enormous engineered jigsaw. Despite working with it for over two decades, we are still discovering new ways to use it, and no two days or projects are ever quite the same.

Audiences see the surface, but behind it can be steel structures, cabling, ventilation, motors, lifting & flying systems and carefully designed connections.

Each element is essential, but the audience should never be distracted by it, because when the engineering disappears and the creative vision takes over, that is when a set truly works.

Celebrating the talent behind the lens 📸

This World Photography Day, we want to give a special shout-out to London-based photographer Johan Persson, who specialises in production photography across film and live theatre.

Johan has photographed a number of productions and sets that we have been fortunate enough to work on, most recently Oresteia at the Bridge Theatre and Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium, capturing the scale, detail and atmosphere of the finished work beautifully.

So much time, creativity and craftsmanship goes into bringing a production to life, but without brilliant photography, many of those moments would disappear once the curtain closes.

A huge thank you to Johan and all the photographers who help us share the work happening on stages, sets and behind the scenes.

At first glance, creating sets for TV, theatre and cruise ships might appear to involve a similar process. However, the environment can change almost every decision made behind the scenes.

With experience delivering creative construction across all three, our latest article explores the different technical and practical demands of each environment, alongside the considerations that remain essential across every production.

From weight and transportation to installation times, live movement and working within a venue at sea, there is far more happening behind the finished set than audiences might realise.
