We are hiring!

Scott Fleary is looking for a skilled and driven Head of Engineering to lead our talented team.

Working across theatre, television, and live events, you’ll play a key role in delivering ambitious, high-quality scenic projects, on time, on budget and to the highest standards.

What You’ll Be Doing

- Lead the Engineering Department to deliver precision-built scenic structures from complex technical drawings
- Plan and manage production schedules alongside the Workshop Manager
- Maintain high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency across all projects
- Champion health & safety and sustainable working practices
- Oversee equipment maintenance and safe usage
- Build a positive team culture with strong morale and collaboration
- Support training, apprenticeships, and career development within the team
- Lead engineering teams on-site when required

We are looking for someone with:

- Proven experience in scenic construction, fabrication, or a related industry
- Strong MIG and TIG welding skills (essential)
- Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and ensure team accuracy
- Excellent knowledge of materials and fabrication techniques
- Experience in planning, scheduling, and team leadership
- Confident leading both workshop and on-site builds
- Strong understanding of H&S compliance (some qualifications desirable)
- Highly organised, calm under pressure, and a strong communicator
- Comfortable using standard digital tools (e.g. Windows, Google Docs)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest at The Old Vic.

Presented as part of the theatre's In The Round season, the production transformed the auditorium into an immersive environment, placing the audience at the heart of the action.

With the performance unfolding on all sides, the set became an integral part of the storytelling, creating a space that felt both open and claustrophobic at the same time.

A huge thank you to set designer Ben Stones and the wider production team for bringing this to life.

Roland Garros is in full swing 🎾

It's great to see the pavilion looking fantastic once again this year and playing its part in one of the biggest events in the sporting calendar. These are a few behind-the-scenes shots showing you a glimpse into the work that goes into bringing projects like this to life.

A brief tells you what something needs to do.

A vision tells you what it needs to feel like.

After thirty years of working across theatre, broadcast and live events, the most important thing we have learned is how to tell the difference early, because the two require completely different things from a construction team.

A brief can be delivered.
A vision has to be understood first.

That understanding usually happens in the conversations before anything gets drawn.
The projects that go well are almost always the ones where that conversation happened properly.

Summerfolk at the National Theatre.

A CNC-cut planked floor across the full Olivier stage, a dacha built around a completely hidden steel frame with a bespoke spigot system at every junction, trees light enough to fly but strong enough to hold, and a water pool whose irregular outline required nearly 200 welded joints on the liner alone.

One of those projects where every single element had something genuinely interesting going on beneath the surface!

Scenic carpentry looks like woodworking with a theatrical twist.

The reality is considerably more involved.

A scenic carpenter needs to understand structural engineering well enough to know when a design will not hold, and materials well enough to know how something will behave under stage lighting or an outdoor broadcast environment.

You can teach someone to use the tools relatively quickly.
Teaching them to read a project, anticipate problems and make good decisions under pressure takes years.

It mostly happens through experience rather than any formal programme.

Throwing it back to Roland Garros 2025.

We had five weeks to build TNT Sports' broadcast studio in the middle of the tournament's main fan zone, work around trees and light poles that sat inside the footprint, and deliver a late-addition elevated outdoor platform with direct views of the courts.

It went on to draw over 620 million views across Europe. Not a bad week in Paris.

The West End just had its biggest year on record. 17.64 million theatregoers.

A pipeline of productions that shows no sign of slowing, and behind all of it, workshops full of people who started work long before the first rehearsal.

We have been thinking about what that demand looks like from where we sit, the coordination it takes, the precision required, and the relationship between a construction team and a production that only gets more important when timescales tighten.

This week, we wanted to shine a light on something quietly significant happening within our team.

Larissa Valls, our Deputy Project Office Manager, completed a two-day Mental Health First Aid course with St John Ambulance last year, and since then, she's been a point of contact for anyone at Scott Fleary who needs a conversation or a bit of direction without judgment.

She's clear that the role isn't for diagnosing anyone or offering clinical advice, but rather being a grounded, confidential presence.

Someone who can help signpost the right support, assess whether a situation needs escalating, and sit with you if you just need to talk.

Larissa has noticed something since the course that's worth saying out loud.

People are opening up more. Even in a very male-dominated environment, where these conversations don't always come easily, the mere knowledge that someone is there, trained and ready, seems to make a difference.

Mental health support in physically demanding, fast-paced workplaces doesn't have to look a certain way. Sometimes it starts with a poster on a wall and one person willing to have a real conversation.
