Adrian Ghenie (b. 1977, Romania)
I went to visit Ghenie's exhibition here in London at a commercial gallery in Mayfair. I've been a big fan of his work, so it was nice to see a large selection of his latest work in person.
Ghenie paints dark, disturbing canvases that weave together personal and collective memories related to the traumas of European history. In 2015, he represented Romania at the Venice Biennale and has enjoyed exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Tate Liverpool, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest. At auction (secondary market), his work routinely commands seven-figure prices.
