There is much said in academia about the psychological meaning and impact of racism that does not make it out of these realms to inform policy, education and support those impacted by racism.

Following on from my psychosomatic experience that inspired this event, I undertook some research to understand the physiological impact of racism. This 2022 paper on “The enduring effects of racism on health: Understanding direct and indirect effects over time” by Sarah Stopforth and Laia Becares from King’s College London, UK, and Dharmi Kapadia and James Nazroo from the University of Manchester, UK caught my attention and spoke to my experience.

For those impacted by racism, yes our external environment is causal, but is there anything we can do to heal the wounding racism causes and obtain/provide necessary support around this?

Talking about it and emotional processing is helpful, I have seen and experienced. As is being in community, supportive, therapeutic spaces …and cultivating joy:

The subject matter for this Deep Talk event emerged a few weeks ago from my reflections and stark realisations on the harmful impact of racism and anti-Black sentiment on the mind and bodies of Black people.

I wanted (felt a need) to create a psycholgically safe space for us to talk about the impact and raise awareness on the types of therapeutic support available especially as racist tensions/enactments increase. Triggered by subsequent experiences, the audience for this event evolved and with that a recognition around a duty of care around what it means to create a safe space. In support of this, the upcoming event has been curated specifically for Black people/people of African decent.

🫧 Event Details:
📆 6th September 2026
🕡 3pm - 10pm
📍Bread & Butter Lounge, 1st Floor
🎟️ from £11 via Eventbrite. Link in bio/in comment section.
🍴You’ll also be able to buy Caribbean food at the venue.

Please bring ID.

🫧 What to expect:
* Reflective Session - a space to talk about and reflect on the psychological, emotional and physical impact of racism with Psychotherapist Martina Jean-Jaques

* Panel Discussion - on the psychology of racism and tools for support, healing and wellbeing with a collection of Psychotherapists

* DJ Sets - playing deep emotive and uplifting beats to evoke a sense of joy and wellbeing through dance

🫧 Accessibility:
The intimate space I’ve decided to use is on the first floor with no lift which may impact those with mobility issues. I apologise for any disappointment this may cause, and will be looking to secure ground floor/accessible spaces for some of my future events based on how well this one goes.

A few months ago I had to travel outside of London on a couple of occasions and I felt a sense of fear and terror at the prospect of leaving the familiar multiculturalism of London. One included going to go to a rural town that is mostly White. Now, I’m not saying the town shouldn’t be mostly White, but my terror as I had to arrange connections and taxis, was around how they might be toward me as a human being that has been racially categorised as “Black”, particularly as racists have and are becoming more and more emboldened in these times.

I developed a really bad cold and cough - like it was really, really bad. I experienced the usual enactment of the programming that equates black with thief, but it wasn’t until my train pulled into London, Kings Cross that something major happened. My violent cough abated which I correlated with the relief of returning to the familiar and relative safety of London. It was here that I starkly realised the physiological impact that racism has on its objects and what this means for our health and wellbeing in the short, medium and long term. It took me days to process through the terror - I barely wanted to leave my home.

Through this I concluded that racism is an existential threat, an act of terrorism, and a weapon of mass destruction.

But racism is not just about White peoples against Black and Brown people/people of colour. Calling out the proverbial elephant in the room based on recent experiences I have had with Asian (maybe Chinese) women, there is also the facticity of anti-Blackness and anti-dark skinnedness and the ways in which this is enacted by people of colour.

As things progress with my therapy training, holding the tension between the joy around this and the pain and hurt and fear of racism (as well the distress of the anti-life actions around the world) has felt/feels difficult to balance at times.

I am grateful to encounter human beings who are doing the inner work to undo the programming of racism whether as victim and/or perpetrator as well as engage in activism (of which the inner work forms a part). This has helped and helps.

The whole reason for me being in the Carribean: wedding an old school friend I’ve known since the age of 11 - we met at secondary school ✨

I recall receiving the invitation and wondering how if I’d be able to make it with the multitude of things I had going on which included family illnesses plus a potential clash with therapist training seminars because missing them could delay qualification.

I pressed my student advisor for the academic dates to establish if there’d be a clash as part of her response she said something along the lines of “what an honour it is to have been asked to be a part of wedding party”. God, how that landed; and she was absolutely right! As such I conceded that I was going to go no matter what.

There were seminars clashes and work commitments but I was able to attend to them because I could do them online and because Antigua was “only” 4 hours behind.

The wedding ceremony took place on Sunday, 23rd November on the rooftop of the Royalton Hotel and was lovely - Shamilla was a gorgeous bride and it was indeed an honour to be a part of the celebration of love - thank you for the invite hun 🙏🏾♥️

Being that side of the world also enabled me to connect with my half brother as well as meet his wife and my 7 month year old nephew - gosh what a beauty boy!

I’m looking forward to going back to the Caribbean to Jamaica and more ✨
