Let’s talk fresh vs healed tattoos 👀
I think it’s so important to show healed work and help manage expectations when it comes to tattoos. As much as I love a fresh tattoo the crisp lines, bold contrast, and that brand new look, tattoos are made to be with us for life. We change, we grow, we age, and our tattoos come along for the whole journey. It’s completely normal for them to soften and settle over time, and that doesn’t make them any less beautiful.
Every tattoo heals differently. Factors like placement, skin type, lifestyle, aftercare, sun exposure, and even genetics all play a part. No two people heal exactly the same, which is why I always try to guide my clients towards designs that will age well. If I’ve ever suggested making something a little larger or simplifying a design, it’s never because I’m being difficult it’s because I’m thinking about how that tattoo will look not just in a year’s time, but in 5, 10, or even 20 years.
Personally, I love a fresh tattoo. There’s something so satisfying about seeing a piece at its boldest. But I know plenty of people who prefer the softer, settled look of a healed tattoo and how it blends with the rest of their collection.
So, what do you prefer? Fresh and crispy, or loved and lived-in? 👇🏼
