As part of our project, we are collecting stories and comments from various communities about different smells and how people associate them with memories. Do you have a favorite smell? What does it remind you of? Do certain scents remind you of different people in your life? Let us know below!

Comments get turned into individual leaves that will be placed on our collective memory tree. We won’t use your full name or personal photo in our project. You can request that we not share your comment in our project at any time.

The two main ideas behind this project are based on two different methods of disability-friendly forms of creating artwork. One is the memory tree, which is a visual representation of a person’s important memories, usually used for patients with dementia or Alzheimer's. Another is based on works by visually impaired artists that use their sense of smell to make up for the lack of sight. The use of scents allowed all participants to participate equally and served as a catalyst for the expression of memories brought on by specific scents. By having participants use their own selected scents and colors while creating flowers, they produce physical representations of their memories or displays of their personal preferences while sharing stories and anecdotes from their experiences with the smells. Both the artworks and notes are placed on a collective memory tree, representing the interconnectedness of individual experiences in a natural and growing setting that can be contributed to and enjoyed by others.
