I would like to share something quite personal. A life update I could keep private, many would choose to, however, I have made a very conscious decision to share it.
In July, I will be having a preventative, nipple-sacrificing double mastectomy and reconstruction. Before you ask, I am not ill. However, I carry the BRCA1 genetic fault. Some of you may know what this is, for those who don’t, here is some brief context.
In short: we all have a BRCA1 gene, but there are faulty versions. If you inherit the BRCA1 fault, your lifetime risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer, including at a younger age, significantly increases. Generally between 60-79%. I’ll share more on this in time.
Because of this high risk, the NHS offers preventative options: routine screenings (which I’ve been doing) and preventative surgery. A mastectomy can reduce risk by around 90–95%, bringing it much closer to that of the general population.
I’ve been sitting with this since 2021. It has already shaped my life.
So why share this? Because knowledge is power. Discovering my family carried this fault gave me some agency over something deeply surreal.
This knowledge places me in a position that is both difficult and privileged — and one of responsibility. Silence doesn’t serve me here. If this helps even one person feel more informed, or less alone, it matters. And I need to share this to process as an artist.
Also…
I’m inviting you to witness and join me as I respond to this creatively. My body is going to change. Irreversibly.
And my work lives in the body. You’ve already known it - through movement, performance, visual art. This is its next iteration.
The next negotiation.
So this becomes a project.
A living one.
Before surgery.
Immediately after.
And everything that follows.
Not polished.
Not resolved.
Just honest.
An exploration of loss — physical, symbolic, imagined.
What does it mean
to choose loss?
To meet it
head on?
I’ll be opening this up :
R&D spaces, collaborations, documentation.
If you feel drawn, you’ll find your way in.
more info to come. Stay with me✨
