Tri Sasongko, a revered Javanese artist, masterfully blends traditional Batik with contemporary techniques, crafting art steeped in spiritual storytelling. Influenced by his family’s 200-year batik legacy in Yogyakarta, Indonesia..
His global exhibitions, including UNESCO and ASEAN art awards, showcase his talent. Tri Sasongko’s artistic prowess, nurtured at The Indonesian Institute of Fine Art (ISI), led to solo exhibitions and explorations into hand-dyeing techniques, enriching his fabric designs. His studio in Taman Sari welcomes art enthusiasts for immersive batik workshops. His art journey blends tradition, innovation, and a passion for evolving Batik’s legacy.
Who are the master artists that inspire you?
I draw from the pioneering spirits of Pablo Picasso, Aubrey Beardsley, and Egon Schiele, I seek to synthesise elements of their groundbreaking techniques and distinctive styles into my own artistic voice. Through a fusion of fragmented perspectives, intricate detailing, and emotive figuration, my art endeavors to pay homage to these influential artists while forging a path toward an expression that is uniquely mine. Their legacies continue to fuel my creative exploration, guiding me toward an artistry that seeks to challenge, provoke, and resonate with audiences on a visceral and emotional level.
I am also inspired by the Indonesian master Affandi Koesoema. Affandi’s known for his emotive and expressive style, and influences my work through a shared emphasis on conveying emotion and narrative depth. Affandi’s bold strokes and emotive use of colour resonate with my exploration of vibrant hues and emotional storytelling.
