We're excited to be performing two of Brenda Gifford's pieces in London this Friday, Biwaawa and Bardju (Footprints). Brenda writes, "Bardju represents our collective journey and tells us that we should tread lightly on Mother Earth; and it also represents my personal journey as a Yuin woman. Through this piece, I recalled my memories of country. My music grounds me in, and gives voice to, my culture. I do not create in a vacuum, and my culture is at the core of my creativity."
Brenda Gifford is a First Nations, Yuin woman from the Wreck Bay area. Her country, community and culture are the basis of her arts practice. She is a contemporary classical composer and creates music for ensembles, orchestras, choirs, dance performances, festivals and concerts. She works collaboratively and is a classically trained saxophonist and pianist.
Our program Black Ice reflects on the Australian wildfires of 2019–20. On fire, Brenda writes, "Communities have their own fire services and they do harzard fires to protect the community and country. Fire (Dundun) can lead to renewal with new growth." Brenda also wrote jazz piece about Fire (Dundun) as an ABC jazz commission and recorded on abc jazz and performed with my jazz quintet Barra Barra.
