This July I spent a wonderful two weeks in West Cork, painting the coast, with my friend . It was a strange experience, very much out of my usual lane, painting en plein air, with nothing but coloured water to describe the huge, sublime spaces; people seem to imagine that that sort of painting is a relaxing experience but I’ve never felt so exhausted or frustrated. All the time I was painting I could hear words from my book on watercolour painting echoing mockingly around my head. It was only when I got them home that I saw anything good in them. It’s a strange business, painting. But and I had a lovely time nevertheless, with and Peter, and met loads of fabulous people including a surprise catch up with Tessa Coleman. West Cork is an extraordinary place.
