'Doctor'- কোন পেশার নাম নয়...

তাহলে কি?
এটা মূলত একটা উপাধি। যদি কোন বিষয়ে কেউ সর্বোচ্চ জ্ঞান অর্জন করে তাহলে তাকে সেই বিষয়ে Doctorate উপাধি প্রদান করা হয় এবং তার নামের সামনে Doctor প্রিফিক্স ব্যবহৃত হয়। সেটা চিকিৎসাশাস্ত্র, ইতিহাসবিদ্যা, পদার্থবিদ্যা বা যে কোন সাব্জেক্ট হতে পারে।

মূলত MBBS পাশকৃত একজন ব্যক্তির পেশাগত নাম হল Physician (ফিজিশিয়ান). তাহলে, কেউ MBBS পাশ করলে তাকে কেন Doctor বলা হয়?

চলেন, একটু ইতিহাস ঘেটে আসি।

১১-১৪শ শতকের দিকে ইউরোপীয়ান ইউনিভার্সিটিগুলোতে Doctorate ডিগ্রীর প্রচলন শুরু হয়। একই সময়ে বিশ্বের অন্যান্য দেশগুলোতেও এর প্রচলন ছিল। Doctor শব্দটি এসেছে ল্যাটিন Docere থেকে। যার অর্থ 'শিক্ষক'।

১৩শ শতাব্দীতে Medicine শাস্ত্রে সর্বোচ্চ জ্ঞান অর্জনকারীকে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় MD বা Doctor of Medicine উপাধী প্রদান করে। অর্থাৎ, উনি এই শাস্ত্র শিক্ষা দেয়ার যোগ্যতা অর্জন করেছেন।
বস্তুত যারা চিকিৎসা শাস্ত্র নিয়ে পড়ালেখা করত বা কাজ করত তাদের বলা হত Physician. কিন্তু, সর্বোচ্চ ডিগ্রী ধারীকে বলা হত Doctor of Medicine.....

কালক্রমে, এই Doctor উপাধি ধীরে ধীরে পেশার নাম হিসেবে পরিচিতি পায় এবং ঐতিহাসিকভাবে MD ডিগ্রীটি পরবর্তীতে MBBS নাম ধারণ করে। এই কিছুদিন আগেও কলকাতায় MD-ই পড়ানো হত। পরে Medicine এর সাথে Surgery যুক্ত হয়ে MBBS নামকরণ করা হয়।

এখনকার সময়ে কেউ নামের আগে Doctor বসাতে চাইলে তাকে সংশ্লিষ্ট বিষয়ে PhD ডিগ্রী অর্জন করতে হয়। এর বাইরে সারা বিশ্বে স্বীকৃত একমাত্র ডিগ্রী হল MBBS... যা সম্পন্ন করার পর ব্যক্তি নিজের নামের সামনে Doctor উপাধিটি ব্যবহার করতে পারবে।
এটা সত্যিই এক দুর্লভ সম্মান...!

একজন প্রফেসর স্যারকে থার্ড ইয়ারে জিগেস করেছিলাম যে MBBS পাশ করলে আমরা Doctor কেন বলি?

স্যার বলেছিলেন, MBBS হল অনার্স লেভেলে পৃথিবীর সবচাইতে দীর্ঘ কোর্স এবং অত্যন্ত কঠিনসাধ্য একটা ডিসিপ্লিন। অনেক স্কলার বলে থাকেন যে, MBBS কমপ্লিট করা অনেকক্ষেত্রে PhD করার থেকেও কঠিন। এজন্য সম্মান করে MBBS পাশ ফিজিশিয়ানদের Doctor উপাধি দেয়া হয়।

তাই নামের আগে এই উপাধিটি ব্যবহারের আগে এর ওজনটি বুঝে নিতে হবে।

ইংরেজী Doctor / ডক্টরকে বাংলায় / বাংলাদেশে ডাক্তার বলে।

যারা MBBS পড়ছেন তারা ভালভাবে পড়ালেখা করবেন যেন এই Doctor উপাধির মান রক্ষা হয়।

ইভেন পাশ করার পরেও পড়ালেখা জারি রাখা দরকার...

কারণ, উপাধি অর্জন যত না কঠিন, রক্ষা করা তার থেকে বেশি কঠিন।

সারকথা:

নামের আগের Doctor বসাতে গেলে কোন বিষয়ে PhD ডিগ্রী অর্জন করতে হবে বা চাইলে MBBS কমপ্লিট করেও এই উপাধিটি যে কেউ ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন।

কে বা কারা তাদের জনগনের পিছনে লেলিয়ে দিয়েছিল শত্রু বানানোর জন্য তা আমাদের সকলের জানা।

পুলিশ ছাত্র সংঘর্ষে যদি আপনার পরিচিত কেউ মারা যায় হোক সে ছাত্র কিংবা পুলিশ আর তাদের পরিবার যদি আর্থিক ভাবে অসচ্ছল হয় দয়া করে বিস্তারিত আমাকে ইনবক্সে জানাবেন।
