Nice to see a couple of works by Ethelbert White in Pallant House Gallery engaging new show “British Landscapes: A Sense of Place” (until 1st November). The variable quality of White’s later work can easily eclipse his remarkable and much underrated painting from the 1910s to the early 1930s - very much underpinned by his unrivaled ability as a wood engraver. The curators have inventively hung the first picture on a wall decorated with Edward Bawden’s famous “tree and cow” wallpaper…

“Humility” is possibly Southall’s first major tempera painting, executed in 1884 a year after his first visit to Italy. The picture hung above the mantelpiece in the artist’s own drawing room in Edgbaston (see second image) becoming untraced soon after his wife’s death in 1947. Recently rediscovered in the USA, it is perhaps the most exciting discovery in our current show …

Joseph Southall was a central member of the Birmingham Group of Artist-Crafstmen - a gathering of highly talented and like-minded artists who shared the same Arts and crafts aesthetic. This poster design by Southall (almost certainly used as a poster in its own right) is remarkable in its very survival. It show’s the artist’s lifelong interest in fashion and bears the names of several of his other great contemporaries, amongst them Arthur Gaskin and Charles March Gere. It was produced for an exhibition of their work in 1919.

Painted in the medium for which he is best known, tempera, this work is included in our current show “Joseph Southall - A Late Romantic” which runs at our gallery in Mason’s Yard until 27th May in association with

Joseph Southall Exhibition - May 2026

We are excited to announce that our May exhibition will be dedicated to the work of the Birmingham artist Joseph Southall - we believe the first show on the painter for over twenty years (since the Fortunoff Collection at the Fine Art Society in 2005).

Held in association with we will be showing over sixty works by the artist, the majority offered on the market for the first time, including pictures in tempera, watercolour, pencil, pen and drypoint.

A fully illustrated catalogue can be purchased from the gallery and is also available online or through a link in our biog above
