We’re delighted to announce our representation of the Basil Alkazzi Estate ().

A remarkably prolific artist, whose career spanned over six decades, Basil Alkazzi (1938-2015) left an immense and varied body of work encompassing metaphysical journeys, landscapes, dreams and abstract visions. Most known for his luminous gouache paintings, Alkazzi’s oeuvre overwhelmingly addresses cycles of life, rejuvenation and celestial forms fused with the natural and human world.

We’re looking forward to our first presentation of Alkazzi’s work at British Art Fair next week. Find us at Stand 5, Gallery 1, 24-27 September.

Today is the birthday of Manina (born Marianne Tischler, Vienna, 1918-2010)

A self-invented name meaning “little hand” in Italian, Manina developed a deeply personal Surrealist language of myth, symbolism and the subconscious. Her work was championed by André Breton, who described it as “pure poetry”.

This September, we’re bringing Manina back to New York for the first time since her 1951 exhibition at Hugo Gallery, alongside René Magritte as part of Independent. The work pictured here will then travel to Echoes of Maldoror at ANOTHER SPACE next month.

Happy Birthday, Manina!

Works from Bracha’s Eurydice - Pieta series are included in ‘In Our Image: The Fragile Body in Contemporary Art’ at The Warehouse, Dallas, opening 26 September.

In the artists words:

I work in the tension between trauma and nightmare, Eros and grief, ashes and light, and the feminine.

The series is based on fragments from the painting series Eurydice which in itself is based on treated photocopies from a photograph from the second world war showing mothers, women and children about to be shot by n***s. As in the series Eurydice it deals with transgenerational memory and oblivion, shared histories of violence, and the new element that appears is the relation between Eros, greek god of love and s*x, and Thanatos, son of the goddess of the night, that carries human beings to the underworld upon dying.

In the series, where colors become poetic and time stops still, the horror of the mourning of mothers over their children (Pietà) in situations of war is approached.

The show runs to 30 January 2027.

For Independent, we’re spotlighting Austrian born, Italian artist Manina (1918–2010).

This will be the first exhibition of Manina’s work in New York since her exhibition at Hugo Gallery in 1951. With early acclaim from André Breton, who heralded her as a born Surrealist, and her later inclusion in the 1986 Venice Biennale, Manina receded from view due to personal reasons and as attention shifted away from Surrealism. This presentation brings together key works from the 1950s–1970s. It rediscovers her as a visionary painter whose spiritual symbolism reframed Surrealism beyond Paris, and secures her place as one of the most important women Surrealist artists to come out of Italy.

Jacqueline Poncelet’s In Translation opens at MOCA London this September.

Created in collaboration with master weaver Caron Penney of Atelier Weftfaced, the exhibition brings together Poncelet’s new tapestry In Translation (01) with the original watercolour on paper from which it was developed, exploring how an artwork changes as it moves from one medium to another.

The exhibition will also feature a new iteration of Other Cosmologies, with Poncelet’s 2026 watercolours printed onto vinyl and installed across the gallery walls.

An exhibition dedicated to the formative years of the Puerto Rican Surrealist artist Cossette Zeno. A significant yet overlooked figure within Caribbean and international Surrealism, Zeno developed a distinctive visual language during a pivotal five-year period, moving from the avant-garde circles of Puerto Rico to the centre of André Breton’s Surrealist movement in post-war Paris.
