Why Authentic Voices Matter in Production Music
Post-production is often called the invisible art. Editing, sound design, colour grading and music shape how audiences feel, often without them ever noticing.
But there is an important question we should ask more often: Who is creating that music, and whose experiences are being represented?
If we want authentic storytelling on screen, we need authentic voices behind the music that supports it.
For too long, production music has sometimes been seen simply as a functional tool, a quick solution to an editorial challenge. But the best music does much more than fit a scene. It brings emotional truth, cultural understanding and genuine perspective.
That is why creating opportunities for underrepresented artists matters. Not because diversity is a box to tick, but because it leads to better creative outcomes for editors, producers and audiences alike.
Education and collaboration have a vital role to play. Partnerships with organisations such as Leeds Conservatoire through Quarry Music, projects with Truro College, apprenticeship schemes, writing camps and professional workshops all help open the industry to talented people who may never have seen production music as a career.
Just as importantly, measuring progress matters. Diversity reporting and evidence-led inclusion help ensure that good intentions are matched by meaningful action.
The result is stronger catalogues, broader creative choices and music that feels authentic because it is created by people with authentic lived experiences.
I'm looking forward to exploring these ideas at Assemble (the Post Production Conference designed to bring together industry professionals, academics, and creatives to explore the latest developments in post-production) During the schedule for July 10, MediaTracks will be leading a workshop on production music, representation and why the future of our industry depends on widening access to creative opportunity.
Because when authentic voices create authentic music, everyone benefits.
