Mujer Semilla

Two shaft design with tie & dye. The method of dyeing by hand consists of colored patterns which are produced through the gathering of small portions of the yarn and tying them tightly with string before immersing them in the dyebath. The dye fails to pe*****te the tied sections leading to Tie & Dye design.

About the Artist:

The doors to the weaving studio 'Mousami Basak' opened in the year 2000 as part of Pintu Basak's dream of increasing gender equality within the context of fiber-based art, hoping to create a positive impact in his community.
Pintu found inspiration to become a fiber-based artist in his family, who had been professional weavers for generations. When first establishing the weaving unit, the group was conformed by three weavers. Presently, the number has increased to twenty master weavers. The group is integrated by highly skilled weavers, all adept in the weaving of intricate designs.

-- About (not) Anonymous --

(not) Anonymous intends to revive the idea of timelessness, as the art of weaving is one of the most precious testimonies of the past. Hand weaving is a method of foaming a pliable plane of threads by interlacing them rectangularly. The first human expressions by weaving dates back to 3,700 BC (Predynastic Egyptian).

This collection stands to deanonymize the artistic hands that have carried the textile art for millennia. The artists presented here come from remote indigenous communities. Their ancestors have served as mentors of many recognised contemporary artists such as; Anni Albers, Gunta Stölzl, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Sheila Hicks, amongst others. However, most of these ancestral artists have stayed in ‘anonymity’ as they are associated as illiterate underdeveloped groups, thus not being considered part of the elitism governing the art and design markets during the last centuries. Moreover, textiles have always suffered as an art media because of their association with domesticity and femininity. This collection is inspired from said exclusion however aims to change this perception.

The conversation between the nine artists presented in the collection lies in the interconnectedness between the artists and their natural surroundings. All of them integrate the use of organic forms highlighting the essential importance of material awareness and their connection with the natural order. As such, this mode of expression connects the artists to their ancestors and their cultural heritage. Serving as one of their few modes of expression.

This exhibition is a small attempt to recognise the profoundness lying behind thread-based art while giving a voice to the artists that carry this knowledge.

Natural wool and natural dyes on berber loom

In Morocco, the mountain barrier formed by the High Atlas is not foreign to the identity conservation of villages where the art of weaving is one of the most precious testimonies of the past.

The traditional berber loom is so rudimentary that it has no name; it is called “azetta” (the chain). The Berber weavers of the Sirwa are renowned for their wide range of textiles and their technical knowledge and artistry.

Training to become a master craftsman was an essential part of the reform concept at the Bauhaus. Each student signed an apprenticeship contract with the tradesman council. Walter Gropius (founder) modelled with this method of training on the systems used by artisans and craftsmen.

“To attempt to build up theories of art, or to form a new style, would be an act of supreme folly. It would be at once to reject the experiences and accumulated knowledge of thousands of years. On the contrary, we should regard as our inheritance all the successful labours of the past, not blindly following them, but employ simply as guides to find the true path.”
