EL PROJECTO BARRIO

Hi folks, next weeks there will be a small festival showcasing work from Latin American artists which was originally scheduled within VAULTS festival but will now be happening at the Temple of Art & Music in Elephant and Castle next week.

The Barrio Project is an ACE funded pilot for a creative development programme which will ultimately result in a community-devised performance about a specific cultural identity and its relationship with the wider world - both on a local community level and an international level. Barrio looks specifically at the Latino community in the Elephant and Castle area of London.

Actors and non-actors from the community were invited to take part in focus groups, workshops, and creative entrepreneurship masterclasses local to them. From this pool of participants, the production of Barrio was cast. Barrio combines elements of storytelling, movement, sport, live music and a live DJ, which draws upon the experience of the Latino community in London. The narrative follows the journey of a young man who was born in Colombia and moved to the UK at the age of 5. He is a first-generation immigrant who considers English his first language and London as his home. Barrio explores a juxtaposition between British and Latino Culture with the aim to foster an understanding of migrant experience, to deal with uncomfortable issues and stereotypes, and to promote kindness and empathy through intercultural dialogue.

In addition to the theatrical element to the event, we have "emerging artist" slots for Latin musicians to showcase their talent. Sunday's "Singers" slot is for those who want to try out their material on stage with a professional live band - a dynamic twist on the convention open mic. Tuesday and Wednesday are for soloists who want the stage to themselves to showcase their talent - this will be filmed in 4K and the footage given to each performer to use as they wish for their own promotional purposes.

As a musician, you get free access to Singers, but for the wider festival, here's the ticket link:
