📚🤗 Happier than on my graduation day* 😅 Thank you so much Independent Publisher Book Awards 🥰 and I’m especially pleased that it’s in the juv - young adult category as I wish I had read something like this when I was growing up.

❤️ My deepest gratitude to my fantastic book editor Shaven Raven Designs and to ✨ everyone ✨ involved in the creation & publishing of “The Weird & Wonderful Surviveries of Squid Horse”.
I couldn’t have got this far without you! 🏞️

📚 Curious?! Find my book at bookshops with excellent taste such as The Common Press The People's Letters (uvwbooksellerstsl) & others! It’s available as an e-book too.

📚 It’s also available at some libraries such as Hackney library, Brixton library, Barbican young people’s library. Or you can ask your library to get a copy.

NB: It’s a collection of short stories in comic form. You can read in any order, start & end anywhere or skip parts. However I recommend you read the content notes on the contents page. You can find out more about it and find out where to order on my bio link.

*if you read my book you know what I mean 🤭🫢

☔️ We don’t know if the raindrops last night were Professor Arday’s tears or those of the media (real or fake), but here are some actions.

May every reporter be not only held accountable but self-reflect re: their participation in this hypocritical and agenda-filled hara$$ment of a human.

To add to the examples of non-Black figures with biog inconsistencies, Bob Dylan’s recent “biopic” is full of inaccuracies but even though it’s documented, he is not subjected to anything like the level of despicable scrutiny Professor A was made to endure. I have more to say but I’ll not take up space as there are relevant voices out there and you can listen to them.

Ps. The group Stand up to racism organised a vigil today which feels timely & relevant. Since SUTR have a lot of resources available to organise events & protests (often for causes I believe in), may I please request that SUTR also put resources towards accountability and transparency over historic SV apologism as some of us have memories and it’s documented online. As an organisation dedicated to humanitarian causes, I urge you to look into modelling accountability & justice as well??! (To my knowledge there wasn’t any yet???) Basically my take is, groups can acknowledge harm and complicity, and doing so can be transformative, while pretending it never happened feels problematic.

This is something I’ve struggled with for a while especially since being in friendships and social circles where mindfulness, overt appreciation (even a quick thanks) is more usual.

Hearing a fellow ESEA resonate with my descriptions of SquidMum reacting to me reporting having done stuff for her with a blank stare, I’m starting to view it as cultural differences / differences communication styles (and social/work background?)

This week maybe I am feeling a little shift in accepting that she has non verbal ways of saying please and thank you.

I’m very worried about climate change, in the UK extreme heat and lack of rain which makes the grass yellow (depicted).

Delxsh is a trans masc character from a series with the working title “Lucky Devil”. I guess it’s instinctive ad to whether I draw Joonkid or Delxsh as they overlap a lot 😅 but I guess maybe Delxsh is handy for expressing slightly more OTT emotions or things I feel more cringey about sharing?

I’m currently sort of wondering whether to collect Delxsh comics or the new Joonkid comics ready for INQ! Or a new comic called Tree & Cloud which is about friendship and depression.

Or maybe even collect together Mr Carrot comics. It’s hard to decide. If you have a fav you’d like to see in a comic, lmk in comments!

🦊🧤I used foxglove for my images!

Thank you Alistair Reid Pencils4Tea - Kirsty Lockhart

Got back from the forest, made dinner & just had time to do some watercolour washes!

Also braved shadows - just once (slide 10). At first I really regretted it but it’s grown on me. Dare me to try again or stick to my strong point, lines (eg slide 11). 😄

🌳 It’s that time of year again… 🍃 Sometimes, a story told imperfectly is better than a story not told at all.

✏️ Swipe to the end for original sketches made on the tragic journey & one of 6 oleander hauntings! Content notes for slides 7-8, sxxual harassment, sexism.

📚 These are random panels (not in order) from my comic memoir “The Weird & Wonderful Surviveries of Squid Horse” out now in paperback & e-book.

I drew many of the stories in a state of gloom / rage / anxiety and these days I’m even starting to plan more and use thumbnails! 😅

While disappointed & disheartened at some of the gate-keeping I’ve experienced, the fact is I’ve been thru some unusual yet relatable experiences & my debut comic has connected - sometimes with people who don’t usually read comics, and it’s inspired people to make comics / create!

Thanks to everyone for your kindness & solidarity!

Ps. I ran these through

Thanks Caption 2026 for a fun trip to Oxford, community / connection / convo focused comics festival with comics on sale too. Pirate themed activities such as comics, collaborative ship building (!!!) & quiz plus talks, tea & pizza. Thanks to all the organisers & volunteers for your energy & dedication. Recommend!

SIX TO WATCH (4 present) Jua OK! Yu-Ching Chiu Illustration 邱宇晴插畫 daisy🌀 Shri Gunasekara Andy Oliver Broken Frontier - I was wandering around in a heat daze but glad I caught this talk and heard from these brilliant emerging artists. Check out their work!

Hoping someone will send me the photo of our panel “Trans Narratives”. Thanks everyone who joined us.

Stayed a night before for access reasons. It was good to get away and both regulating & despondent back at the squid cave!

ICE CREAM (interesting melon & my 🏴‍☠️ go-to rum n raisin) from iScream Oxford (it has good reviews & dad used to love saying “I scream you scream everybody screams”!)

FISH, chips & mushy peas - delicious, fresh & friendly service from Atlantic Fish Bar Maria Mendes 😋

✏️ SKETCHES made at Gulp Fiction chai latte wasn’t offered but I paid the difference and finally started reading this bell hooks work everyone talks about. Will put a few more sketches on stories.

Stay tuned for a reel ⚓️ of the pirate ship characters including a kraken that we came up with!

Thank you Pencils4Tea - Kirsty Lockhart for playing my playlist today. Thanks everyone for modelling! Most of it was written by and / or performed by me (along with some help from other musicians). As a trans person it feels good that non trans people know we exist.

Today’s playlist encompassed many story adventures I’ve been on & a few tracks by others.

Even when I don’t agree with people on subjects, I find we can talk about music and art. That’s the power of music and art - they’re wonderful things that can help us communicate despite our differences and through appreciating creativity, discover things we share.

Thanks to all the models and sorry as usual for non likenesses etc! I actually got a bit distracted at one point cos this is a body of work since 2014 or so and I felt moved hearing and watching Pencils4Tea engage with it.

See you next time 🦑

Ps I was running late and messaged Kirsty to ask to delay playing my playlist cos I felt super un photogenic (and I’m vain 😂😂) but then I lay down for 3 min and did a raspberry face mask 🤣🤣 and deciddd it was too short notice and deleted my message! I’m glad it happened Thank you Kirsty!!!

🌲🍓 My short story “Red” won 2nd prize/place in the writing contest London Writers’ Salon 🌲 a twist on Red Riding Hood but with non binary and intersex characters, and reminiscing in my (lol!) reckless abandon electronic dance music partying days. I also liked how the title was a pun on the verb “read”.

That’s all I’ll say for now so you can explore the story! It feels strange to hear it read even though it’s possibly AI! 😯

The contest was called “Verb your enthusiasm” after a title of the same name by the judge Sarah L Kaufman. The contest is monthly and the prompts feel really fun! I enjoyed getting my teeth into some tasty verbs 🦷

Read RED for FREE via the online magazine here https://open.substack.com/pub/writershour/p/fiction-red?

SLIDE 2: Berries from my garden

SLIDE 3: an old drawing of some red riding hood characters I drew during a QTIBIPOC crafty cuties session with Folami (aka Fimi) - not really connected to the story i wrote, but who knows it could be…
