In this generation of consoles, we’ve already come to expect either 60fps or at least some sort of performance mode. To see a heavily advertised first-party Microsoft title launch at just 30fps is a hefty punch to the gut.

The coincidentally named Gary Bowser, who was convicted for helping to sell devices that allowed people to play illegal ROMS on various consoles has been released from prison early due to good behaviour. Presumably, that means he did not attempt to take over the prison with an army of Goombas and then murder Mario.

The fine folk over at MIT Technology Review broke this fascinating story and provide plenty of detail about the technology used and what it could mean for the future. As a humble idiot, I’m just going to go over the basics.
