Berlinde de Bruyckere (b. 1964) is a Belgian 🇧🇪 contemporary artist specializing in sculpture in various media, including 🕯️wax, wood, wool, horse skin, and hair.

She also works in watercolor and gouache, and since the early 1990s, many of her major works have featured structures involving blankets. Their use symbolizes warmth, shelter, and the vulnerable circumstances, such as wars, that make people seek such shelter.

🧜The title of her current exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in Zurich, "A simple prophecy," is a line drawn from the poem 'Preliminary Investigation of an Angel' by 20th-century Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert, which considers the transgression of the divine to the profane by drawing parallels between totalitarian regimes and biblical mythology—reads the Tessa Moldan's article.*

Yto Barrada’s work is certainly political, though she resists interpretations that reduce it to a critique of contemporary Morocco 🇲🇦—notices Ross Simonini in the introduction to his interview with the artist published in in 2017. ✍️

💬 Yto Barrada also explains that despite her photography studies at the International Center of Photography in New York and the fact that she has made several films, such as "Hand-Me-Downs" (2011), [...] and "Faux Départ/False Start" (2016), [...], describing her as a photographer and filmmaker is misleading—the artist creates a vast spectrum of curious, anthropological-looking objects, installations of colorful rugs or blocks, and stacks of idiosyncratic research. 👩‍🎨

🙅🏾 “All my work explores strategies of survival—of resistance and constraint,” she said. “The central question remains disobedience and insurrection. How does one acquire and transmit political courage?”*

[Cinémathèque de Tanger] art deco cinema sits at the heart of the city and has been lovingly restored to its original grandeur. But it’s hardly a sacred temple of film; the cinema is a neighborhood hub that bustles with local life even on a baking midsummer morning. It’s the art house other art houses dream of being—beautiful, eccentric, and welcoming—writes Hester Underhill for .

🪅🌎 Barrada is recognized for her multidisciplinary investigations of cultural phenomena and historical narratives—writes .

💙 The coach of our dreams this week, Latifa Echakhch .echa, is a Moroccan-born contemporary artist who has established herself as a leading creative mind in her home country of Switzerland.

“I’m a happy person,” she exclaims, “but when I make work, I find I’m creating beautiful things and then destroying them! I’m always asking: what’s my problem?”*1 😊

Informed by the ways in which everyday objects and imagery can be transfigured into signifiers of identity, history, and mythology, Latifa Echakhch’s practice takes the form of painting, installation, sculpture, and sound. [...] 🎀

🌏 Echakhch states she has “no other goals but questioning the world around me.”

Throughout her career, the artist has constructed a visual vocabulary of signs, systems, and references that are rooted in her impulse to convey the experience of a feeling, to transcend that which is easily defined, and arrive at the intangible.*2

Vivienne Westwood (1941-2022) was an English fashion designer and businesswoman who brought modern punk and new-wave fashions into the mainstream. 🤘

Yet, apart from rocking the fashion world, also the art world greatly appreciated her input.

What were her beginnings? 💃

At the age of 17, Westwood took a jewellery and silversmith course at the University of Westminster, then known as the Harrow Art School, but left after one term, saying: "I didn't know how a working-class girl like me could possibly make a living in the art world". 😲

After working in a factory and studying at a teacher-training college, she became a primary-school teacher. During this period, she created her own jewellery, which she sold at a stall on Portobello Road. In 1962, she met Derek Westwood, a Hoover factory apprentice. For their wedding, Westwood made her own wedding dress.

Westwood came to public notice when she made clothes for the boutique that she and Malcolm McLaren ran on King's Road, which became known as S*X, synthesising clothing and music that shaped the 1970s UK punk scene, dominated by McLaren's band, the S*x Pistols.

❤️ Punk, for her, was a way to "see if one could put a spoke in the system".*

Westwood opened four shops in London and eventually expanded throughout Britain and the world. Some of her merchandise promoted her many political causes, such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, climate change and civil rights groups.

In this week's Coaches of Our Dreams series, we host the marvellous Tracey Emin (1963). 🥇

🗺 The artist lives and works between London, Margate and the South of France. In 2007, she represented Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale . In 2011, she became the Royal Academy's Professor of Drawing. In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II appointed her Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the visual arts.

Since the early '90s, Tracey Emin has produced a body of work that encompasses all forms of artistic expression, including painting, print-making, drawing, film, photography, installations, appliqué, sculpture and neon text.

She is recognizable by her frank, confessional style and transforming her inner emotional and psychological world—personal experiences, memories and feelings—into art that is both intimate yet profoundly universal.*🔥
