Construction began in 1842, but was not continuous. It was consecrated in 1855. In 1907, its spire was erected.

It was his first church.

The foundation stone of St Mary's church was laid on 4th July 1838, Queen Victoria's Coronation Day, and only 17 months after, in October 1839, it was completed.

It was opened on 9th October 1839.

The builder was George Myers, Pugin’s builder.
