One of our final tutor introductions go to the utterly exceptional Matthew Horn, who will, coincidentally, be tutoring the horn! It is such an honour to have so many top class tutors for this project!

'Matthew Horn is a professional freelance French horn player based in London. He has played with orchestras including the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Glyndebourne Tour Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, and on West End productions including Les Misérables and Doctor Doolittle.

Matthew is a dedicated teacher, who has experience teaching horn players of all ages and levels. He has had the joy of journeying with some of his earliest beginner students all the way up to grade 8 standard. He is an enthusiastic teacher and workshop leader, keen to share his knowledge and experience. Matthew's teaching method involves helping his students achieve solid foundations in their horn playing technique and developing a good sound quality. It is a treat to welcome our Trombone Tutor Ali Goodwin to the team, our Orchestra definitely got a notch louder! There is still one place available for a trombone participant, so do let your friends know!

'Alistair grew up in Hampshire, southern England. Originally a Baritone player in the local band Ali soon found himself on Euphonium and winning the principal seat in the Hampshire County Youth Band and at aged 15 picking up the bass trombone where attended the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra. Soon afterwards he gained a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with David Stewart and Eric Crees where he graduated in 2018. From there moving to Gothenburg, Sweden to study his master’s with Ingemar Roos and Louise Po***ck.

Ali is a keen orchestral and ensemble player and during his studies was lucky enough to play in many great ensembles such as Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Norrlands Opera, Gothenburg Opera, Gothenburg Wind Orchestra, Ungdomssymfonikerne, EUYO Brass Dectet to name a few.

Ali is also a member of the Aeris Brass Trombone Quartet who won 1st place at the 2019 British Trombone Quartet Competition, finalist in the Royal Overseas League brass ensemble category and have had collaborations with John Kenny, Carol Jarvis, Mike Lovett, Rex Richardson, Rick Taylor, and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

In his spare time Ali enjoys swimming, Italian food, and trying to play louder than his two brothers and Dad who also happen to play trombone.'

We are thrilled to introduce our Percussion and Timpani Tutor Peter Rayner! There is still availability in the percussion section, so if you know anyone who would like to improve their orchestral percussion skills- then tell them to get in touch!

'Peter trained as a percussionist at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, gaining experience playing music of all genres, with a focus on orchestral music, studying under the UK’s top musicians.

Peter has spent his time since graduating building a successful freelance career as a percussionist and drummer, regularly undertaking ad-hoc concerts. His main, most recent work has been participating in regular tours as the percussionist for ‘Maksim Mrvica’, biggest selling crossover pianist with tours to China, Europe and Canada.

As a teacher, Peter is currently a peripatetic percussion and drum teacher at Portsmouth Grammar School, Ryde School with Upper Chine, Cranmore School and Surrey Arts. This includes one to one lessons, leading percussion ensembles and tutoring in ensembles such as the Surrey County Youth Jazz Orchestra.'

It is an absolute privilege to introduce the first of our Horn Tutors; Flora Bain! Between our two horn tutors there is an incredible wealth of experience and knowledge for you to benefit from!

'Flora is a horn player in her final year of postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She is a foundation scholar on the Orchestral Artistry course studying with Richard Bissill, Phillip Munds, Angela Barnes, Sue Dent and Jonathan Lipton. She has a first class undergraduate degree from the Royal College of Music in London where she was a scholar supported by a Michael Quinn Award and was taught by Simon Rayner, Jeff Bryant, Kira Doherty, Timothy Jones, John Ryan and natural horn with Roger Montgomery. Prior to her studies, she was taught by Richard Kennedy.

Flora is currently the horn player for the 2020-2021 LPO Foyle Future First program. Flora has had a wide range of professional orchestral freelancing experience. She has played with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the LPO, Orchestra of the ROH Covent Garden, the RPCO, the Royal Danish National Symphony Orchestra and WNO. She is currently on trial for fourth horn with the LSO and the Orchestra of Opera North.

Flora also enjoys historical performance and has performed solo Baroque Horn in Bach's B Minor Mass at Cadogan Hall with the Florilegium ensemble. She recently joined the ensemble as principal Baroque horn in Bach’s Brandenburg concerto No 1 which was later broadcast on BBC Radio 3.'

We are thrilled to announce our final Violin Tutor Olivia Ziani! Olivia is a wonderfully versatile musician and will be leading the Second Violins!

'Olivia Ziani was born in London in 1999 and began playing the violin aged 6. She is currently studying with Yossi Zivoni at the Royal College of Music, where she is a Musicians’ Company Lambert Scholar.

Olivia enjoys playing and performing in a variety of settings as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral violinist. As a soloist, she has performed in the UK, Algeria and Germany, and in venues including St Martin-in-the-Fields, St James’s Church Piccadilly, St John’s Church Waterloo and the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury. She has appeared twice as the concerto soloist with the Ashford Baroque Ensemble in performances of Mozart and Bach and gave a solo recital as part of Leeds International Concert Season 2017.

As a chamber musician, Olivia won first prize in the Pro Corda National Chamber Music Festival in 2015 with her string quartet and has played in ensembles across all kinds of different genres, including jazz, pop, world, contemporary, baroque and classical.

Olivia is currently the principal second violin of Capital Orchestra and has recently performed as leader of the Royal College of Music Opera Orchestra, and principal second of both the Royal College of Music Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras. She was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 2014-2017, where she performed thrice at the BBC Proms, recorded a well-received CD for Chandos, and performed in Festival Berlioz 2017 in France.

In 2019, Olivia was a member of the Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra for their inaugural season, with whom she toured extensively in Russia and the UK performing in venues including the Philharmonic Hall in St Petersburg and the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow.

Olivia was also selected as a Britten-Pears Young Artist in 2020 and as a Yeoman of the Musician's Company in 2019.

As an orchestral musician, Olivia has performed in some of the country’s most prestigious venues, such as the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Liverpool.'

Introducing our sensational Flute Tutor Fiona Sweeney!

'Fiona is a flute player from Glasgow, who is currently living in London. Before moving to London, Fiona studied at the junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Ruth Morely, where she was awarded the annual ABRSM Scholarship and was the winner of the Junior RCS Concerto Competition in 2016. Fiona was a scholarship holder for her undergraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and was awarded a first-class honours degree, in addition to the Concert Recital Diploma for excellence in her final recital. She was also awarded The Principal’s Music Prize.

Fiona is currently also a scholarship holder on the Orchestral Artistry postgraduate course, in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Guildhall School, studying with Gareth Davies, Christopher Green and Philippa Davies. During her time at the Guildhall, Fiona has won the Needlemaker’s Prize for Woodwind 2021, was a finalist in the Ivan Sutton Chamber Prize 2021, and was the winner of the St James Chamber Music Prize 2019. In addition, Fiona is a current artist on the Hattori Foundation for Music and the Arts, The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, The Craxton Memorial Trust, The Cross Trust, and a grateful recipient of the Ian Fleming Instrumental Award from Help Musicians UK. Fiona was also awarded a highly commended in the British Flute Society Young Artist Class 2020.

Orchestrally, Fiona has played principal flute with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, Ungdomssymfonikerne and The Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. She has also played with the Jersey Chamber Orchestra as well as playing in operatic settings with the Dorset Opera Festival and Guildhall Opera Productions. This coming winter, Fiona will join the pit orchestra as part of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular Show.

In addition, Fiona has recorded a flute sonata written by renowned composer and french horn player Richard Bissill for his upcoming CD, and was part of the stage orchestra at Wireless Festival performing with grime/R&B legend, Stormzy.

Fiona is a keen teacher in addition to her work as a performer, and currently holds two peripatetic teaching positions in high schools throughout central London. She has lead parent and toddler workshops as part of the Hackney Music Development Trust, and in 2019 was involved with the Guildhall Young Artists programme, in collaboration with Music Education Islington. In Scotland, Fiona has been a tutor on the West of Scotland Schools Training Band, and has been involved with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Futures Project, in collaboration with Drake Music Scotland, the nations leading charity that creates music making opportunities for children with special educational needs.'

We are extremely excited to present our Leader for the weekend; Isabella Fleming! She will be tutoring the First Violins and working with all the strings in the large string sectional too!

'Isabella is a London based violinist who recently graduated with Distinction in her Masters from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the LSO Orchestral Artistry course. During her time at Guildhall she studied with Simon Blendis, and prior to this with Arisa Fujita. In 2018 she graduated with First Class Honours from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where she learnt with John Crawford. She is the 2018 recipient of the Trinity Laban Silver Medal for Strings.
She previously attended the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department.

During her time at Trinity, Isabella led the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra and the TL Sinfonia Strings, and was a finalist in the Vivian Joseph Classical Concerto Competition and the Leonard Smith & Felicity Young Duo Competition. She was also a finalist in the 2019 Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra Soloist of the Year Competition.

She is a former member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, performing at major venues including the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall for conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, John Wilson and Paul Daniel. In 2013 Isabella played in the Queen’s Coronation Festival Gala concerts with NYO at Buckingham Palace. She was a finalist twice at the Stratford and East London Music Festival's 'Young Musician Competition', gaining an 'Outstanding' and 2nd place in 2014.

Isabella has freelanced with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and has played side-by-side with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle at the Barbican and Trafalgar Square. In the summer of 2017 Isabella enjoyed playing at the Dorset Opera Festival, and in 2018 played in the Britten-Pears Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop at the Snape Proms.

As a soloist Isabella has played with the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra at St John’s Waterloo with conductor Christoper Stark, and the CoMA ensemble conducted by Gregory Rose in concerts at Kings Place and St John’s Smith Square. Isabella also very much enjoys teaching the violin, and has an LTCL teaching diploma with distinction.'
