This summer, discover St Ives at The Redfern, a celebration of one of Britain’s most influential artistic communities.

St Ives at The Redfern brings together artists whose work has been shaped by Cornwall across nearly one hundred years. Alongside historic figures including Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Roger Hilton CBE, Patrick Heron CBE, Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost RA, Margaret Mellis, Paul Feiler, Keith Vaughan, Catharine Armitage, and John Tunnard, the exhibition presents a contemporary generation of artists—Leigh Davis, Samuel Bassett, Ben Sanderson, Felicity Mara, Naomi Frears and Linder Sterling—whose practices have engaged with the Cornish landscape, atmosphere, and creative legacy of the region.

To coincide with the exhibition, The Redfern Gallery will host a Panel Discussion on Thursday 30 July, exploring the history, legacy and continuing influence of St Ives on British art.

Exhibiting artists Naomi Frears and Samuel Bassett will be joined by Ian Massey (Art Historian, Curator, and Author of Q***r St Ives and Other Stories, 2022), and Laura Smith (Artistic Director of The Hepworth Wakefield and former Curator at Tate St Ives).

Exhibiting artists Naomi Frears and Samuel Bassett will be joined by Ian Massey (Art Historian, Curator, and Author of Q***r St Ives and Other Stories, 2022) and Laura Smith (Artistic Director of The Hepworth Wakefield and former Curator at Tate St Ives).

⚽ As England prepare to face Argentina in tonight’s World Cup semi-final, we revisit Danny Markey’s paintings of football.

Painted from life and rooted in places close to home, Markey’s football scenes are inspired by years spent on local pitches—as both a player and a parent. Based on sketches made from the touchline, they capture the anticipation and quiet drama that make football such a powerful shared experience.

From neighbourhood fields to the world stage, football has a remarkable way of bringing people together.

Happy Pride! 🌈

To celebrate Pride in London, we’re shining a light on Keith Vaughan (1912–1977), one of Britain’s most distinctive twentieth-century painters and an artist whose deeply personal vision continues to resonate today.

Largely self-taught, Vaughan developed a unique visual language of dreamlike landscapes inhabited by expressive, lyrical figures. His paintings became a deeply personal means of exploring identity, intimacy, and the human form, creating works that remain powerful, poetic and profoundly moving. As Ian Massey writes, « landscape acted as a metaphor both for the physical body and its absence. »

We’re delighted to include Keith Vaughan in our forthcoming exhibition ‘St Ives at The Redfern’, celebrating the artists who shaped—and continue to shape—the remarkable legacy of St Ives. During the 1950s, Vaughan became closely connected with St Ives, travelling to Cornwall with Patrick Procktor and Bryan Robertson. All three occasionally stayed at John Milne’s house in St Ives. Vaughan also visited Patrick Heron – a great admirer and champion of Vaughan’s paintings – at his home near Zennor. As a result, the landscape and artistic community of St Ives became an important source of inspiration.

For those wishing to explore the rich q***r histories of Cornwall’s artistic community, Ian Massey’s book ‘Q***r St Ives and Other Stories’ is available through our website via the link in our bio.

🖼️ Florence Hutchings in the studio:

Experimentation lies at the heart of Hutchings’ practice. Influenced by the spontaneity of the COBRA group and Hans Arp’s embrace of chance in collage, she works through trial and error, allowing unexpected forms, compositions, and relationships to emerge. As layers are added, moved, and reworked, each work gradually develops its own identity, balancing intention with unpredictability.

In this new body of work, Florence Hutchings reimagines chairs as playful, almost figurative characters. Inspired by John Woodforde’s book ‘The Observer’s Book of Furniture’, the works bring together furniture spanning the Stuart period through to the Victorian era, alongside the familiar modern office chair. Through hand-painted collage, these everyday objects begin to take on distinct personalities, each with its own presence, expression, and relationship to the others.

Reflecting on the series, Hutchings explains:
“I’m interested in how a few simple interventions can shift an everyday object into something that feels animated and human.”

Hutchings graduated from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2019, where she was awarded the Lynn Painter-Stainers Scholarship. Since then, she has exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions in London and Seoul, and her work is held in notable collections including that of Charles Saatchi. Hutchings is represented by The Redfern Gallery.

🎨 Danny Romeril in the studio:

Whilst our current exhibition ‘Under One Roof’ explores the creative dialogue between two artists working side by side, each maintains a distinctly individual practice.

For Danny Romeril, painting is rooted in observation and the everyday. Working from his studio in Margate, opposite Florence Hutchings’, Romeril draws inspiration from the objects, interiors and landscapes that surround him, transforming familiar scenes into quietly evocative compositions that reward sustained looking.

Reflecting on his practice, Romeril explains:
“I still believe in the real human contact of making.”

This commitment to the act of painting itself runs throughout his work. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Romeril has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally.

In memory of David Hockney, one of the most influential artists of the last century.

This clip from A Bigger Splash (1973) captures Hockney alongside Mo McDermott and Patrick Procktor within our former Cork Street premises.

Procktor and Hockney shared a close friendship and sustained artistic dialogue that proved formative for both artists. As noted in .independent , during a European holiday in 1967 with Hockney and Peter Schlesinger, Hockney handed Procktor his box of watercolours—a moment that sparked a revelation, as Procktor took to the medium instinctively and went on to become one of the most accomplished watercolourists of his generation. Hockney’s profound influence on modern art—through his bold use of colour, innovative approach to perspective, and continual experimentation across media—has shaped generations of artists, and his encouragement of Procktor reflects a generosity and openness that extended beyond his own practice, nurturing the talents of those around him.

Our thoughts are with Hockney’s family, friends, and the countless artists, writers, curators, and admirers whose lives he touched.

🌟 Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Private View of Under One Roof.

Bringing together new works by Florence Hutchings and Danny Romeril, the exhibition reflects the artists’ unique working relationship. Installed across from one another in our galleries, the presentation mirrors the way they develop their paintings and visual ideas at home: in separate studios, divided only by a corridor, yet engaged in a continuous dialogue.
