With the aim of fostering a thriving creative community for the stage and screen, Kahani Arts Creative Network will bring like-minded people together in a supportive group that will meet regularly to share skills, knowledge and experience.

To wrap up the event there will be networking drinks to connect with aspiring filmmakers, and the opportunity to chat with the BFI NETWORK South East team and Kahani Arts.

"My Son Is Gay" by Abir Mohammad

After living in his q***r utopia in London, Hussain moves back to Essex where he decides to come out to his loving, Muslim mother. Things turn sour as she isn’t nearly as receptive as he planned, and the two deal with the harsh reality of their relationship potentially never being the same again.

Abir Mohammad is a writer that aims to tell stories about q***r South Asians, with a strong focus on religion, family and coming of age. As a q***r South Asian that comes from a working class, conservative Muslim background, he wants to give a light to the stories that his specific sub-section of both the LGBT+ and South Asian communities face without featuring traumatising content.

We're excited to be showcasing Abir's story at our scratch night at Kenneth More Theatre. Book now at this link for an amazing night of new and inspired theatre

"Home is Where the [Something] Is" by Amanda Rosario

Inspired by lockdown and the Government Census, this short-play delves into issues of identity for Anglo-Indian mum Glenna and her daughter Lara, as they struggle to define the changing nature of both their relationship to Britain, and to each other.

Amanda worked as a film actress in India for the majority of her career before coming back to London to focus on her writing. She is currently studying a Masters degree at Cambridge University in Performance Writing. Her work often explores feminism and social-justice; relationships; ideas of identity and post-colonial ‘other’.

We're all looking forward to showcasing Amanda's story at our scratch night at Kenneth More Theatre. Book now to be there

From India To Essex by Sharanpreet Kaur Atwal (An Extract)

India, 1966. Brother and sister, Sanveer and Jasminder are told by their father that their family is moving to Grays, Essex and they have no say in the matter. With 2 very different opinions about leaving the only village they know – will Essex ever feel like ‘home?’

This is a story of belonging, acceptance and blending two cultures together.

“From India To Essex” is based upon the true story of Sharan’s father moving to Grays from Phrala in 1966. She would like to thank her father, Rajminder Singh Atwal and aunt, Hardeep Kaur Sahota for their stories and reflection to create this early draft.

Sharan is a writer and actress based in Essex. Previous writing credits include “Dear Baby” R&D commissioned by The Mercury Theatre, Colchester and The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, 2021.

“Home To Me” A monologue written for Tamasha’s online Festival HOME 2020.

Sharan was selected for Kali Theatre Company’s Artist Development programme leading to a rehearsed reading of “Faded” @ The Tristian Bates Theatre, Leicester Square.

Sharan’s spoken word piece “Unapologetically, Me” was created into a short film, produced by Essex Visual Arts. Her scene, “Return to Hope” was selected for actors to use for the Do Or Die Studios Cast Me competition. Sharan’s sketch, “Facts Faults and Extra Chilli Sauce” produced by Pursued By A Dragon was shown for their online scratch night. “One Sip Away From Happiness” was selected for the Caspa Arts scratch @ The Phoenix Artist Club and also for the Outer Limits festival, Southend.

Sharan is delighted to be a part of the Kahani Arts festival and grateful to be able to share this early draft of “From India To Essex”.

Kahani Arts is very excited to be showcasing this authentic, emotional story at our Festival. Click link to book your ticket now.

"Unpopular Culture" by Tahira Dar

How do we encourage our children to follow their dreams, if we found it difficult to truly follow our own? How will they cope being a part of many cultures without belonging to any?

'Unpopular Culture' by Tahira Dar, is a funny and honest exploration of how to have realistic expectations in an unequal world, particularly when popular culture can both influence and ignore us.

Tahira Dar is a London based performer, who trained at Contact Theatre in Manchester and Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris. Her current work-in-progress solo show explores motherhood, representation and the confusion of being both influenced and ignored by popular culture.

You can watch 'Unpopular Culture' at our scratch night at Kenneth More Theatre

"You'll be fine" by Saher Shah

If you had one chance to speak your younger self and deliver a message to them, what would it be? “You’ll be fine” is a spoken word love letter to all those who have ever thought about how they ended up where they are now, a journey of one British South Asian Woman’s reflection on life and it’s many lessons.

Saher is an actor, writer and poet from Redbridge. Her writing features strong female leads and champions stories from British South Asian backgrounds, unapologetically incorporating South Asian languages and culture into scripts.

Ever accidentally farted in front of someone you were trying to impress? We feel your pain. Auditioning can be just as embarrassing and stressful, especially if you’re not extremely castable like Scarlett Johansson who can “play any person, any tree or any animal”. The Indian Troll Factory, in this exciting new chapter, presents an amalgamation of lived experiences showing the world what it’s really like being a disappointment to immigrant parents… Whoops, we mean… Being a South-Asian actor auditioning for roles such as Dr. Koopthrappali or Terrorist #8!

Gavin Joseph and Prashant Tailor launched The Indian Troll Factory to create art which not only reflects their respective realities but to laugh at the pain which comes from making-ends-meet through show-business. Our writing slaps with truths that many have swept under the rug.

Catch them at our scratch night at Kenneth More Theatre
