Marking the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street through the magic of poetry. BBPC has taken part with the special guest, Michael Rosen to celebrate the modern Cockney (bold, inclusive and generous non-posh Londoners) and the anti-fascist legacy of the Battle of Cable Street. This event marked the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, when the East End community stood together to defend their local Jewish neighbours and to stop Oswald Mosley's fascist Blackshirts in their tracks. The participating poets explored modern Cockney identities and the unity and comradeship among East End communities through the magic of poetry. Here are glimpse of today's poetry grand slam.

Thursday, 1st October 2026 National Poetry Day is the biggest mass celebration of poetry in the UK. This year's theme is Wonder.

"Childhood Wonder"

The sticky juice of standard summers past,
A golden warmth that was designed to last.
In grandmother’s kitchen, time would always slow,
Where white milk and golden-yellow mangoes used to flow.
She peeled the skin with careful, wrinkled hands,
The gentlest queen of all the childhood lands.
'Just one more bite,' her steady voice would plead,
Pure love was laced through every single feed.
The creamy white would meet the sun-drenched sweet,
A sacred bowl, a messy childhood treat.
She watched me eat with soft, adoring eyes,
Beneath the quiet of the afternoon skies.
The stained shirts washed,
the summers slipped away,
But in my heart, those sweet memories stay.
I taste her love in every fruit I see,
The deepest bond of grandmother and me.

BBPC had a fabulous poetry adda on the theme of East End Identity, where a vibrant group of poets weaved "Bengali Cockney" poems, that fused East End London heritage with Bangladeshi roots, celebrating a dual working-class identity over a cup of chai and marble cake. Here's few glimpses from 23rd August bi monthly poetry meet-ups and a piece of Cockney Bengali poem...

"From Sylhet's green to the old cobblestone,
A new sound rises and claims zone,
Not born just within where the Bow bells ring,
But turned to the heart as the locals sing."

A warm thanks to all the participants for joining us today to celebrate International Mother Language Day. We had a very stimulating yet convivial discourse on the theme “Youth voices on multilingual society and life."

All the participants agreed that how multilingualism can act as a bridge that fosters deep empathy, trust, and mutual respect by allowing individuals to connect through language, cultural nuances, and shared perspectives by reducing misunderstandings, breaks down stereotypes, and enhances emotional connection, making interactions more meaningful.

The light was shed on the origin of the mother language day by the Bengalis and the sacrifices of the language martyrs of Bangladesh in 1952 language movement, Ekushe February.

The discourse pointed out how the 1947 Partition of India—language was portrayed as being deeply partitioned, fragmented, and eroded alongside the physical and human destruction. The session ended up with cultural meditation where each participants shared multilingual words to weave poetry. 📖 📚 📜
