performs in iconic St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden. Featuring string orchestra music with Caerwen Martin’s ‘Stars Come Out in a Midnight Sky’, Grieg’s ‘Holberg Suite’, and Dvorak’s ‘Serenade for Strings’, the concert promises to be a fun, friendly evening for all comers.

Friday evenings are for unwinding after a long week. Luckily, Locus Ensemble has you covered with some great music for string orchestra, including Holberg Suite from Grieg, Serenade for Strings by Dvorak, and a beautiful piece by Australian composer Caerwen Martin called Stars Come Out in a Midnight Sky.

The concert is named after Martin’s work. In her words: ‘The title for this piece is best described by a quote from Martin Luther King “Only in the darkness can we see the stars.” What I take from this is that during times of great trial and hardship, we reach an understanding of the magnitude of life.’ Grieg’s vigorous neo-Baroque homage to Holberg next to cosmic harmonies from Martin’s stunning work and luscious romantic melodies in Dvorak’s Serenade all combine to create a great evening of music.
Programming for this concert was done with that message in mind, leading to pieces which celebrate our humanness, whether by acknowledgement of hard-won accomplishment or through transcendent love.
