The Language You Cry In is a moving documentary that traces an unbroken cultural and linguistic thread across five centuries — from the shores of Sierra Leone to the Sea Islands of Georgia.A testament to resilience, remembrance, and the unbreakable bond between Africa and its diaspora.

What begins as an anthropological mystery unfolds into a profound story of memory, resilience, and return. Through a single Mende funeral song preserved by descendants of enslaved Africans in the American South, the film reveals how language, music, and oral tradition can outlast displacement, violence, and time itself.

This documentary reminds us that even when bodies were taken, voices endured. Across generations, fragments of a song became a bridge — reconnecting families separated by the Middle Passage and affirming the indestructible power of heritage.

Tonight’s screening invites us to listen closely — not only with our ears but with our spirits — to the echoes of ancestry that continue to speak through rhythm, ritual, and remembrance.

Lost Songs of the Middle Passage

Art.Africa invites you to a profound act of remembrance. This powerful exhibition begins in the silence of the Atlantic, where millions of African lives were tragically lost—their voices cut short, their songs silenced before they could echo across generations.

Visual artist Àsìkò’s body of work compels us to ask: what remains of those voices, and how do we hear them now?

Through layered computer generated images, archival fragments, and spectral presences, Àsìkò imagines the spiritual journey of those who perished beneath the waves, drawn toward ancestral memory and a cosmic Baobab that transforms absence into presence.

Opening Night: 24 October
Time: 6.30 - 9.00 PM

Location: art’otel London Hoxton, EC2A 3DT

For more than three decades, Ayodele Ukana has been at the forefront of Nigerian and African contemporary art. His creative journey spans painting, sculpture, welding, etching, poetry, and even NFTs, making him one of the most versatile artists of his generation.

From early exhibitions at the National Museum, Onikan, to international collections in France, Canada, the UK, and the US, Ayodele Ukana’s works have found global resonance. His monumental sculpture, Mother Africa (2018), stands proudly at the African Development Bank office in Nigeria, symbolizing cultural pride and resilience.

In 2020, he unveiled The African Queen Series, celebrating the spirituality, sacrifice, and beauty of women through miniature metal sculptures. Today, Ayodele continues to reinvent himself, bridging tradition and innovation in art, architecture, furniture design, and digital creativity.

The World of Gloire Kanga Ndongala

From the vibrant streets of Kinshasa to galleries across the globe, Gloire Kanga Ndongala is reshaping the way we see the world—and ourselves. Born in the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kanga isn’t just an artist; he’s a visionary. With every stroke of acrylic and oil, every intricate paper collage, he transforms environmental crises into stunning, thought-provoking masterpieces.

But here’s the twist: Kanga’s work isn’t just about beauty—it’s a wake-up call. Through vivid colors and striking contrasts, his art tackles the pressing issues of pollution, climate change, and the rise of viral diseases like Ebola, HIV, and COVID-19. His creations are not merely images but mirrors reflecting humanity’s fragile relationship with the planet.

Why does his work matter?
Because in every brushstroke, Kanga captures the urgency of now. Whether exhibited in Paris, Belgium, or Benin, his art sparks conversations that linger long after you’ve left the gallery. It’s a reminder that while the challenges we face are immense, so too is our capacity to change.

💡 “Art isn’t just for the eyes,” Kanga says. “It’s for the soul—and the future.”

Follow along as we explore his journey, one masterpiece at a time on our website. 🌟

Art.Africa’s founder, Femi, with the talented Ghanaian-British artist , standing in front of Dreph’s powerful mural of Ignatius Sancho (1729–1780). Based on a painting by the famed portraitist Thomas Gainsborough, this mural breathes new life into the legacy of Sancho—a former slave who became a distinguished writer, composer, abolitionist, and the first known Black Briton to vote in a parliamentary election.

Ignatius Sancho’s journey is a testament to resilience and intellect. Born on a slave ship, he was brought to England as a child and raised in servitude. Yet, through self-education and determination, he rose to become a respected intellectual, publishing his letters and advocating for the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. His words and legacy remain influential in the ongoing discourse on freedom, justice, and equality.

Dreph’s mural, with its vibrant colors and expressive portrayal, doesn’t just celebrate Sancho’s achievements; it also reclaims space for Black British history and contributions, reminding us of the rich African heritage within Britain. This art piece stands as a symbol of perseverance and cultural pride, bridging the past and present for contemporary viewers.

Thank you to for capturing this moment that honors both the artistry of Dreph and the historical significance of Ignatius Sancho. 🙏🏾🎨🇬🇭
