Rana Begum at Lehmann Maupin, New York. It was brilliant to see Rana Begum’s first solo exhibition in New York, currently at Lehmann Maupin. It’s a beautiful exploration of light, colour, geometry and perception. Begum’s practice sits between sculpture, painting and architecture, transforming industrial materials through colour and reflected light. The works are never entirely static: as you move around them, surfaces shift, colours intensify and recede, and the surrounding space becomes part of the experience. Drawing on geometric abstraction alongside the patterns and repetition found within Islamic art and architecture, Begum creates a visual language that feels simultaneously rigorous and meditative. Particularly striking are the Reflector and Louvre works, where seemingly simple structures become remarkably complex through changing light and viewpoint. Tony Cragg at Marian Goodman Gallery, Tribeca. For more than five decades, British sculptor Tony Cragg has pushed the possibilities of sculpture, transforming bronze, steel, wood and stone into forms that appear to twist, grow and move through space. This new exhibition, Cragg’s first solo presentation at Marian Goldman’s Tribeca gallery, brings together recent sculptures that continue his fascination with the relationship between material, form and movement. Moving between abstraction and recognisable references to the body and natural world, the sculptures encourage you to walk around them. Profiles emerge and disappear, surfaces change with the light, and entirely different compositions reveal themselves depending on where you stand. Linda Benglis and Torkwase Dyson | Pace Gallery, Chelsea, New York. Pace Gallery’s Chelsea programme currently brings together exhibitions by Linda Benglis and Torkwase Dyson, two artists whose practices are deeply engaged with materiality, space and the physical experience of art. Although their work is distinct, both artists challenge conventional ideas of form and perception. Benglis is known for her dynamic, process-driven sculptures, which move between abstraction, gesture and the body. Dyson’s work explores space, architecture, ecology and the politics of movement through painting, sculpture and installation. Benglis’ sculptures possess a powerful sense of energy while their scale creates an immediate physical relationship with the viewer. Lee Bul - The anatomy of Every Setting Sun at Hauser & Wirth, New York. Her first exhibition with Hauser & Wirth and one of South Korea’s most influential contemporary artists, Lee Bul has spent more than three decades exploring our fascination with progress and the uneasy relationship between technology, power, the body and the utopian futures we imagine for ourselves. An ambitious and visually spectacular exhibition, it brings together major new sculptures alongside recent bodies of work, creating an extraordinary landscape of reflective surfaces, fragmented architectural forms and futuristic structures. Mirrored surfaces, glass, metal and intricate constructions suggest imagined cities and technological worlds, yet beneath lies something more precarious, the recurring cycle between human ambition and its potential failure. Lee’s practice has long questioned our desire to transcend the limitations of the human body and the natural world. Here, ideas of utopia and dystopia sit side by side, asking what happens when technological progress and systems of control begin to shape the very future they promise to improve. Current shows at Berry Campbell | New York. Berry Campbell’s current exhibitions, Perle Fine and In Focus: Susan Vecsey, offer a compelling look at two distinct approaches to abstraction, bringing together artists who’s work is grounded in colour, structure and the expressive possibilities of painting. Perle Fine presents the work of an important American abstract painter whose practice developed through a deeply personal engagement with colour, gesture and composition. Her paintings balance spontaneity with control, creating surfaces that feel both immediate and carefully considered. A quiet intensity to the work, each painting revealing the artist’s sensitivity to rhythm, proportion and the emotional potential of colour. Alongside this, In Focus : Susan Vescey highlights Vescey’s beautiful refined and atmospheric approach to abstraction. Her paintings are characterised by delicate layers, subtle tonal shifts and a strong sense of spatial depth. She creates compositions that feel luminous and contemplative, with a wonderful relationship between colour, light and form. The dialogue between Fine’s more gestural language and Vescey’s nuanced, meditative surfaces, creates a great counterbalance between the shows demonstrating the breadth of abstract painting and the ways artists can use colour and composition to create a sense of movement, atmosphere and emotion. Three exhibitions across Lévy Gorvy Dayan’s Upper East Side townhouse, bringing together three very different approaches to material, memory and abstraction. In MOTHERS, Spanish artist Inma Barrero explores motherhood through sculpture and installation, considering ideas of care, protection, inheritance and the physical and emotional bonds that connect generations. Kenyan- born, Chicago based painter Wangari Mathenge turns to memory in re-membering. Her richly coloured interiors and figurative paintings consider identity, migration and belonging, reconstructing personal and collective histories through the spaces, objects and people we remember. And in Painting on paper, the gallery presents Pierre Soulages, one of the defining figures of post war European abstraction. Known as the “painter of black and light”, Soulages spent more than seven decade’s exploring the possibilities of black, not simply as colour but as a surface through which light could be reflected, absorbed and transformed. The works on paper offer a particularly interesting perspective on his practice. Soulages began exhibiting his bold walnut-stain works on paper as early as 1947, long before developing his celebrated Outrenoir paintings from 1979 onwards. Three generations and three distinct practices, from Barrero’s sculptural exploration of motherhood, through Mathenge’s examination of memory and identity, to Soulages’ lifelong investigation of material, gesture and light. Taryn Simon | Special Focus at Almine Rech, Tribeca. A timely presentation of Taryn Simon’s recent Executive Orders series, continuing the artists longstanding investigation into the systems, structures and unseen mechanisms through which power operates. Simon turns her attention to the objects associated with presidential executive orders photographing the material traces that sit between political decision making and its consequences in the wider world. As with much of Simon’s practice, the photographs appear precise and controlled, yet the ideas behind them are considerably more complex. Objects become evidence, while photography becomes a means of examining how authority is constructed, documented and communicated. The presentation coincides with Simon’s major exhibition Father Country I Do Love You at the Guggenheim, an ambitious project almost a decade in the making that brings together photography, text, video and sculpture throughout the museum’s rotunda. It was incredibly well attended when I visited and has received rave reviews. What makes Simon’s work so compelling is her ability to take subjects that can feel vast and abstract for example institutions, bureaucracy, politics and systems of power and give them a physical presence through objects and images. Wendell Castle : Living | Friedman Brenda, New York. I have loved the work of Wendell Castle since my university studies, so it was a real threat to see a fascinating presentation of the work of Wendell Castle at Friedman Brenda in Chelsea, exploring the point at which furniture moves beyond function and becomes sculpture. Curated by Castle’s daughter, Alison Castle, Living takes inspiration from a 1973 House Beautiful feature documenting the Scottsville, New York home Castle shared with his wife, ceramic and multimedia artist Nancy Jurs. Rather than separating art from everyday life, the exhibition recreates something of that domestic environment, bringing together Castle’s extraordinary sculptural furniture, Jurs’ ceramics and personal objects to show how the couple actually lived with their work. Castle was a pivotal figure in the development of the American studio furniture movement, continually challenging conventional ideas of what furniture could be. His carved, often biomorphic forms occupy an intriguing space between design, craft and fine art a distinction that feels increasingly less relevant today. I loved seeing the work returned to a domestic context. These are highly collectible and museum held objects, but here they feel animated again by the idea of being lived with. Scott Kahn : Silent Night | David Zwirner, New York. There is something wonderfully unsettling about Scott Kahn’s landscapes. Familiar scenes, trees, gardens, moonlit skies and domestic interiors are transformed into places that hover somewhere between observation, memory and dream. Silent night at David Zwirner brings together new and recent paintings alongside works spanning the past twenty five years, revealing the landscape as one of the enduring subjects of Kahn’s practice. His meticulous approach to painting is combined with an extraordinary use of colour and perspective. Moons loom over the otherwise quiet landscapes, trees appear almost animated, and shifts between daylight and dusk create a subtle sense that something is not quite as it first appears. Julia Bland - If blue is a Holy Colour at Derek Ellet Gallery, Tribeca. Working at the intersection of painting, textile and sculpture, Julia Bland creates richly layered works through hand weaving, dyeing, braiding, embroidery and painting. Fabrics, including linen, cotton, bedsheets, clothing and personal materials are repeatedly assembled, pulled apart and reconstructed. For this exhibition, Bland takes blue as both material and idea, considering the colours spiritual, cultural and historical associations, from the apparent infinity of sky and ocean to indigo and lapis lazuli and their histories of global trade. Tension exists between the domestic familiarity of her materials and the scale and presence of the finished works. Geometric grids and woven patterns sit alongside looser, organic forms, while gold leaf, dyed cloth and dread of exposed weave allow light and texture to become part of the composition. The exhibition also introduces tall hanging sculptural works and an 8mm film exploring making as a process of repetition, construction, destruction and renewal. One of a number of great shows this Autumn in NYC that explores the increasingly fluid territory between painting, craft and textile based contemporary art. | Derek Ellet Gallery, 38 Walker Street, Tribeca.
