🇰🇪🕶️ BUILT IN KENYA: SHE WATCHED HER GREAT-AUNT LOSE HER SIGHT. NOW SHE’S BUILDING TECHNOLOGY TO HELP OTHERS MOVE MORE INDEPENDENTLY

For Victoria Mwaura, this wasn’t an idea that started with AI.

It started with someone in her own family.

In 2022, Victoria’s great-aunt developed glaucoma and lost her sight. Suddenly, a woman who had been able to run her own life became increasingly dependent on those around her.

Victoria and her team went looking for technology that might help.

They found solutions. But there was a problem.

Many weren’t designed around the realities of the people they wanted to serve in Kenya.

So they started building their own. 🇰🇪

Victoria is the founder of ProVision Sight Africa, a Kenyan assistive-technology company developing AI-powered smart navigation technology for blind and visually impaired people.

The idea is relatively simple: a camera captures what’s around the wearer, AI interprets the surroundings and audio guidance helps the person navigate.

But what makes this story particularly interesting is how they’re building it.

The ProVision team has been sitting down with visually impaired Kenyans, listening to their experiences and using that feedback to improve things like comfort, usability and navigation.

And people are starting to notice.

In September, Victoria won the Investor Pitch Arena at the Women in STEM Africa Summit in Nairobi, securing KSh500,000 in seed capital for the company.

Then, on 29 September, she took the story beyond Kenya, pitching ProVision to an audience connecting entrepreneurs and investors in Kenya and Australia. 🇰🇪🇦🇺

The technology is still developing and being tested. That’s important.

But perhaps that is exactly why this is a story worth following.

A Kenyan founder saw a problem affecting someone she loved, asked whether technology could help, and started building.

That’s Built in Kenya. 🇰🇪

🇰🇪🌱 SHE BUILT A FARM. THEN YOUNG PEOPLE STARTED COMING LOOKING FOR WORK.

In Namikhoye village, Busia County, Rosaline Siama started small.

In 2021, she was selling fertiliser from a simple mud structure on her property.

Five years later, Rosaline runs the Matayos Farmer Service Center and a 25-acre agricultural enterprise producing soy, maize and sorghum.

But perhaps the most important thing Rosaline is growing is opportunity.

Her enterprise provides rotating work for more than 70 people, including young farmers, university students and other members of her community.

During the busy post-harvest season, more than 50 young people can arrive at her home looking for work.

Rosaline says she tries not to turn them away.

One of the young people she trained was Douglas Ogolla.

Douglas moved to Nairobi looking for work. After six months without success, he returned home and found another route through agriculture, training to operate Rosaline’s threshing machinery.

Rosaline received support through iDE Kenya’s She Feeds Africa programme, which has helped women agricultural entrepreneurs access machinery, finance, business support and training.

It is a powerful reminder that opportunity does not always have to mean leaving the village for the city.

Sometimes it can be built right where you are. 🇰🇪❤️

👏🏾 Rosaline, this is the Kenya we want to keep finding.

👇🏾 Could agriculture create more opportunities for young Kenyans if we treated farming as a serious business rather than a fallback?

🇰🇪⚽ VIHIGA QUEENS ARE COMING TO NAIROBI
This Saturday, Vihiga Queens face Mathare United Women FC at Kasarani Annex Stadium.
Vihiga Queens have already shown what can grow from the counties. The club rose from Vihiga to become Kenyan champions before representing Kenya at the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League in 2021.
Now they return to the capital for another important league contest.
But women’s football cannot grow through the players’ efforts alone. It needs supporters in the stands, communities that celebrate the talent and a football system that gives the women’s game the attention it deserves.

🇰🇪🇩🇪 KENYAN WOMEN BRING CULTURE, COLOUR AND COMMUNITY TO TROISDORF

For a few joyful hours, a corner of Germany felt unmistakably Kenyan.

On Saturday, Kenyan women, families and friends gathered in Troisdorf, near Cologne, for the 2026 annual event organised by Kenyan Women in Germany e.V., better known as KWIG.

Videos shared by people at the event captured Kenyan fashion, music, dancing and a wonderful sense of community. One attendee spoke warmly about the “Kenyan vibes” and thanked Kenya’s Ambassador to Germany, Amb. Stella Mokaya O***a, for taking the time to speak with her.

That personal connection matters.

Diaspora gatherings are about more than food, music and celebration. They create spaces where Kenyans can build friendships, exchange information, support businesses, discuss the realities of life abroad and connect with the institutions that represent them.

KWIG was established to give Kenyan women in Germany a platform to connect, support and uplift one another. The scenes from Troisdorf show that purpose coming to life.

To the organisers, performers, businesses and everyone who attended, asanteni for keeping Kenyan culture and community alive in Germany. 🇰🇪❤️

Were you at the KWIG event? Which conversation, performance or special moment stayed with you?

🇰🇪🎶👔 MEET KENANI: MUSIC, MITUMBA AND A VERY KENYAN KIND OF CREATIVITY

We discovered Kenani in an unusual way.

Not through his music.

Through mitumba. 😄

One of his videos sets a simple challenge: take his Gen Z female friend and style her in an “Official/Old Money” look using affordable second-hand clothes.

Total stated cost: KSh 1,150.

The transformation caught our attention. Apparently, it caught plenty of other people’s too. When we came across the video, it had attracted more than 15,000 reactions.

Then we looked at the man behind it.

Kenani describes himself as a recording and performing artist, and there is a substantial catalogue of music behind the name.

His releases include Daima Mkenya, Asante, Nimewaka and Milima, as well as the 2026 releases All Access and Goosebumps / Church Girl.

But it was his fashion content that got us thinking.

He takes affordable second-hand pieces and shows how much difference imagination, coordination and confidence can make.

It’s mitumba, but treated as fashion. 👔🔥

And perhaps that’s what makes Kenani interesting. He doesn’t seem particularly interested in staying in one creative box.

Music. Fashion. Content. Styling.

Different outlets for the same creative instinct. 🇰🇪❤️

At Engage Kenya, we want to discover more people like this. Kenyans building audiences by doing something a little differently, whether or not the mainstream has noticed them yet.

👇🏾 Have you been following Kenani? And which other under-the-radar Kenyan creator should Engage Kenya discover next?

🇰🇪🇫🇷 TODAY IN PARIS: A LITTLE PIECE OF KENYA COMES ALIVE

If you’re Kenyan in Paris today, there’s a little taste of home waiting for you. 🇰🇪❤️

Cia Paris is bringing Kenyans together today, Saturday 12 September, at L’Oasis de Noisy in Noisy-le-Sec for a celebration of Kenyan culture, food, music and community.

The event starts from 6pm, with Kenyan food, DJs, live performances, family activities and the chance for Kenyans living in France to simply come together.

Because living abroad doesn’t mean leaving home behind.

Our food. Our music. Our languages. Our humour. The friendships and traditions we carry with us.

These are some of the things that keep the connection to Kenya alive, even thousands of kilometres away. 🇰🇪🌍

And gatherings like Ngemi Cia Paris matter for another reason. They give the next generation of diaspora Kenyans a chance to experience that connection for themselves.
