There was something deeply meaningful about encountering multiple Bolivian voices at Photo London 2026.

We were proud to accompany Wara Vargas Lara () as part of the Positions section, where she presented AJAYU: The Art of Healing, a project rooted in ancestral healing traditions, ritual, and embodied knowledge in the Bolivian Andes.

It was equally special to encounter the work of fellow Bolivian photographer Marisol Méndez (), recipient of the Saltzman–Leibovitz Photography Prize 2026 for her project MADRE, a body of work exploring female identity, matriarchal lineage, spirituality, and Andean cultural symbolism through photography, constructed scenes, and family archives.

Moments like these remind us of the growing presence of Bolivian contemporary practices within international conversations, and of the importance of continuing to support artists working across disciplines, geographies, and generations.

Bolivian photographer Wara Vargas Lara will present AJAYU: The Art of Healing at Photo London, opening with the fair’s preview on May 13 as part of the Positions section curated by Maria Sukkar.

The project explores ancestral healing traditions in the Bolivian Andes through the lives of Kallawaya healers, midwives, and herbalists, tracing connections between spirituality, care, and the natural world.

Her work focuses on women, ritual, and shifting identities.

At CBAT, we have been delighted to accompany aspects of this process, supporting curatorial development and elements of production that contribute to the realization of the work.

Vargas Lara’s participation reflects the growing presence of Bolivian contemporary practices within international contexts.

At Spike Island 50 Open Studios with .

Thank you, Nicole Yip and the team at for such a warm welcome and interesting programme during the Open Studios and anniversary celebrations.

Celebrating 50 years since its founding as Artspace Bristol, it felt like a special moment to be part of this evolving community. We’re also grateful for the opportunity to meet and connect with such talented artists, including Myrna Quiñonez, Harriet Bowman, Louise Bradley, Max Naylor, Mahali O’Hare, Jo Ball, and many others.

It was a pleasure to encounter Akira Ishu during his curatorial residency. His community-engagement project, “Owners/Visitors Book”, created for the organisation’s 50th anniversary, invites visitors to reflect on the space, its past, present and future through their own contributions. Rather than a fixed exhibition, the work unfolds over time through public participation.

Akira Ishu’s residency is supported by CBAT, with additional support from Fundación RSV.

ARCOmadrid 2026 left us with more than images. It gave us perspective.

Members of CBAT attended this edition of one of Europe’s leading contemporary art fairs, engaging with the international art ecosystem and exploring new ideas and dialogues.

We come away with valuable conversations and a renewed sense that contemporary Bolivian art has a distinct voice that deserves greater global visibility.

We look forward to what’s ahead.

📣 We are delighted to announce that River Claure () has been selected for the 2026 residency, fully funded by the Contemporary Bolivian Arts Trust, at in London! ✨

River Claure is a photographer and visual artist who makes constructed portraits and magical landscapes. His practice moves across multiple interests including reflections on landscape, Christian iconography, his family’s history and his Indigenous roots.

During the residency (30 September – 15 December 2026), River will develop a new series of self-portraits exploring the intersections between biblical iconography and the Latin American colonial photographic archive. While in London, he will also visit archives and museums to study the history of portraiture and self-representation.

We wish River a productive residency and look forward to following his work throughout his time at Gasworks!
